God’s Word for Today: Zoo
John 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
When one first hears the word zoo and puts it into a relationship with the Bible, out comes the story of Noah and his Ark. This is one of the first stories of the Bible we learn as children. If you have yet to see the newest movie telling the story of Noah’s Ark, I encourage you to give it a watch. Seems a little stretched in places, but overall sheds some light.
Our zoo today is going to take a different direction. I have been to many zoos. I have seen the good, the bad, the really good, and the, well, zoo. The Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Nebraska is probably one of the best. The Wichita Zoo in Kansas is not half bad. There used to be a drive thru type zoo in Grand Prairie, Texas that was pretty cool. And, there are many other zoos that have some bragging rights.
But, no matter what the zoo, the animals are penned in and us humans get to observe. There are many arguments about the pros and cons of animals in captivity. I can see both sides. I can relate to both sides.
One pro for zoos is the fact that the animals are stress free. They will get fed every day. The animals don’t have to worry about predators. Most have a pretty controlled environment. They can be Tranquilo.
The con is the animals are confined. There are basically in an animal prison. Much like that bird in a cage in your home. Or even the gold fish spending its life going in circles the size of its fish bowl. Do animals long to be free? Does that dog who is tied up all of his life daily dream of being able to run? I would say so. Even with the dangers this world has in store and the uncertainty of an animals next meal, for many, freedom would be a good trade. For others, letting someone else take care of all their needs is just peaches and cream.
Here is today’s thought for you to wrap your brain waves around. Think about were your life is at this very moment. Are you actually locked up in the zoo of this world? Yes, you still have daily struggles and finding Tranquilo might be difficult, but basically, the cages and chains of this world have you in their grasp. You really don’t want to be set free. Today’s Scripture can be for those Bible thumpers. You will remain in this zoo of a world. It is better that way.
So what exactly is today’s Scripture saying? What is the truth? What am I being set free from? I am pretty comfortable in my little cage of a world. I have most everything I need. And, if I try hard enough, I might even be blessed to have a bigger and fancier cage than most of the other animals. They will be able to look at my cage with envy. I can even lock the doors of my cage so other animals won’t come in and steal my zoo souvenirs.
Today, know that you will always have a choice. You can follow the pull and enticements of this world, and remain caged up. Or, you can start spending more time in God’s Word which releases you from the zoo. This world is OK. But, how much better if you have the freedom of Eternal life? Good stuff right there. Begin your journey to find the truth. The truth will set you free from life’s zoo………
Prayer: Dear Lord, creator of all the creatures of this world, and me. Thank you for your many blessings. Forgive me for taking these blessing for granted. There are many days I realize this world has me in a cage. Today Lord, I want to step out of the zoo of my life. I know I need you as my guide God. Let’s take a walk of freedom. In Jesus’, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, name I pray. Amen and amen.
