God’s Word for Today: Worse
You know the saying “It can’t get much worse than this”? The driver responsible for the skid steer in this photo, had these thoughts as he headed for help.
But, upon his return, there I am, taking pictures of this rather stuck machine. By the look on his face, the words, “I guess it can get worse” came to fruition. “How much trouble am I in?” were his next thoughts.
This frustrated operator didn’t realize that I appreciated the situation he had dug himself into. “Been there done that” were my thoughts. Followed by, “Only I did it much worse”. Something to do with a buried skid steer in Michigan that took 2 major pieces of equipment, one hour of trial and tribulation, and an audience that went from one observer to over one hundred. His problem as portrayed in the photo only took about 5 seconds and one big tractor to easily make his “worse” disappear. While his situation was respectably stuck, I have seen and been in one way or another, responsible for much worse.
Genesis 4:8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
I read a comment the other day that said, “This world is getting worse every day”. It isn’t the first and I am confident not the last, time I have heard or read this portrayal of our world. Is the world really getting worse by the day? What do you think?
Abel’s world got much worse the day his brother took him out to the field and killed him. Only Adam and Eve with Cain and Abel, and worse found its way in to their lives.
Imagine the thoughts that went through Eve’s head. “Life is worse since I ate that apple”. Or Adam’s thoughts “Why wasn’t I man enough to stop worse?” Or even Cain’s thoughts “Well now I did it. Can’t do any worse than this”.
Worse is what you make of it. There is good in this world and there is bad. Period. Tell the Jews in Hitler’s time that the world is worse now. Or the Native Indians in the United States whose world and lives were taken away. Or the Paraguay population that was eliminated by an estimated 50% in the War of the Triple Alliance. Or every war Veteran that was honored yesterday for giving their lives in the name of Liberty, Justice for all. Tell them all that the world is worse now.
Yes, at times when we are flooded by instant bad news and disasters by every communication means possible, it seems like the world is worse. But, look on the other side of the page. Life is so much better. The world is better. There is more compassion, more good, and more love. There are more happy stories.
It is in your perception of events that determines worse or better. God is good. Life is great. It is your choice to make this world worse or better. Today would be a good time to focus on better. We can’t fix the worse of yesterday. But, we can give it our best shot to provide the best for tomorrow…………Amen and amen.
