God's Word for Today: Works. Yes, today's word is works. The plural version of work. How appropriate on a Wednesday (hump day) to talk about work. And then, not only have the nerve to discuss work, but to make it plural. Oh well. The works of this week will soon slide into another weekend, and then most won't have to face works again until Monday. Those whose will labor this weekend, I am sorry, but I also am glad and appreciate your dedication to your chosen profession.
Today though, is works. Probably the most famous use of the word works is in the game of Monopoly. There are 2 utility companies that can be purchased. One of them is called Water Works. The other utility, Electric Company is self explanatory. But why did Monopoly's creator come up the name Water Works? Yes, it is obvious that Water is a utility. And, good water is slowly becoming a rare commodity. But at the time of Monopoly's invention, I am not sure that people even had to pay for their water. Only in the last 50 years, have water meters come into existence. Previously, the expense for running water in your home was buried in your property taxes. Now, I believe it is both taxes and a water bill. Now who is getting the works put to them?
Man, did I get off on a tangent there or what? Simply put, I wish someone would explain the name of Water Works to me. Because, it is something that has been bothering me since my youth. Of course, you can come up with the argument of, if it wasn't named Water Works, what name would it have? This day and age, there might possibly be someone who is offended by the name Water Works, and will go to extremes to get the name changed? Then, maybe we will have an explanation for this Utilities name.
Ehpesians 2:8. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.
So now we get in to the often heard statement; "Good works will not get you into heaven." This verse I believe has been used more often to get out of work, than it has been used for its true meaning.
Back in the day, there were religious leaders and teachers that thought their waste didn't smell. They believed if they perfectly followed all the teachings and rituals, it was their ticket to God's Kingdom. Somewhere down the human line of progression, what was meant as a rule and guide of faith, turned into a "do it this way or else".
So, along came Jesus to set the record straight. Sometimes, everything has to be removed from the cupboard and cleaned. Because, putting clean dishes in a dirty cupboard is well, not too intelligent. God made it a one direction road to heaven. Through faith in the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, as a Gift, you and I are saved. But what about Mr. Goody Two Shoes? Where do all those fit in? Don't their good works count for something?
I lost a friend yesterday. He had been battling ALS also known as Gehrig's disease. His muscles slowly deteriorated to nothing. Physically, he no longer could do good works. But, my friend still continued to do God's good works. He had every excuse in the world to give up on good works. But, he knew exactly what this verse was saying. No boasting because he knew all blessing received were a gift from God and his job was to in turn, give to others. We will dedicated a GWFT to Tom at a later date. Now, we grieve. Later we will get back to our works.
Today, know that the best things in life are what you work for. That includes the work God is calling you to do. Just put everything in the right order. Receive God's gift of Grace first. Then, it is time to pass on God's gift to others. Not so you can brag about it, but so you can find the meaning of works............................
Prayer: My dearest Lord, giver of Grace, I thank you for finding me. I know I don't deserve your gift. I know my works have been less than stellar. But Lord, you found me and lifted me up and forgave me. Thank you God. And now Lord, it is my turn. Help me to start working for you. I know you have a plan for me God, otherwise you would never have given me your gift of Grace. Let me do your works Lord. In Jesus', whose works set me free, name I pray. Amen.
