God’s Word for Today: Win. Yes, the big W. We all like the word win. Some will do anything to obtain the win. Some are naturals at winning. Win, can almost be an obsession. Who can blame a person for wanting to win when your other option is to lose? Is it really that cut and dry? Do you either win or you lose? Is there a gray area where neither one really matters? Some rather deep or, slightly shallow questions here. It all depends if you have the mindset of a winner, or have settled for less. Or, some say.
Growing up, and for years after that, every Saturday morning on the local radio station, KICX, they had an hour long program call Coaches Coffee Club. The area coaches would come in, and give a brief summary of their previous week’s High School football, volleyball, or basketball game. Typically, it was always the local coaches who had won their game. Once in a great while, a losing coach would talk. But generally it was the winners. Then, the McCook High School coaches would discuss their games since McCook was the home town of the radio station. And then, a well-respected retired coach, maybe Athletic Director of the local Community College, I don’t remember for sure, (Somebody, anybody please help me with a name here. Even if you have never “liked” my post, at least comment with the name of this person……….. Please…….. ) would come on and talk about different athletic accomplishments from various players and would always close with the quote: “Remember, it is not whether you win or lose, it is how you play the game.” Every Saturday, this Coaches Coffee Club would close with his quote. I will always remember the quote. Not doing so well with the name. I never was a winner with remembering names.
Galatians 1:10. Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Well, which is it? If your goal in life is to win, then what are you really trying to win? I know where I have been many times. Winning the approval of others can be a high priority. Sometimes it feels like the only way you can get ahead, the only way you can win, is through pleasing others. Working for someone else, whether private or large corporation, it is easy to find yourself working more for the approval of your boss, supervisor, or even owner, than working hard for God’s Glory. I mean, who is responsible for your income? Who is directly responsible for you keeping your job? Is it the next person higher in your chain of command? Have you done a good enough job pleasing everyone that maybe you could go straight to the Owner if there was a problem? Maybe you are the Owner. Then who are you working to please? Well, the customer of course.
This mindset has a tendency to work very well for a certain period of time. Then, you find out no matter how many you win to your favor, they are all just human too. They have their own priorities. Their mindset of winning may be different from yours. Eventually, no matter how low or how high you are in the rankings, someone is going to let you down. Some person is going to either make you feel like a loser, or throw you into the loser category so they can still maybe win themselves.
How sad. You may have spent years building a career. Buying a nice home. Driving a nice car. Playing a fairly nice game of golf. And then, wham. All of your “winning” is for naught.
Then, the “winners” of this world sell you a book to help you pick yourself up. They tell you the only true winners are the ones who never quit. Get back in the game. Once again, do better to win. Avoid the mistakes that made you lose. Get rid of the losers in your life and only stick with winners. And, many, many more good positive words of wisdom that make sense. They keep you in the game of surviving in the world.
So, you may think this is all well and good for those “winner” type people. You, are more into, “just staying in the game”. You have the strategy of not necessarily playing to win, but just playing not to lose. “As long as I can do just enough to get by, stay on the down low and not get noticed, I will be fine.” “I won’t suffer from ulcers or have a heart attack because I am pretty good at playing the game simply not to lose.” Not a bad idea either. It gets you through life without a lot of drama. You can win by not losing. Or, can you?
God asks more of that from all of us. God really didn’t send His Son into this world to be ridiculed, tortured, and crucified just so we could win for other people. God didn’t give us a direct communication tie to Him so we could just “get by”. Remember, YOU were wonderfully and beautifully made for a reason.
Today, acknowledge exactly what you are trying to win, and who you are giving all your effort to win for. Or, review why you are happy to just, not lose. God gave you a gift. We talked about that. God put you on this earth for a reason. The only way to really win is to start living with God in your life. The true winner in this world not only lives with God in their life, they live for God with their life. It is not really whether you win or lose, it is how, for God, you participate in this game of life……………..
Prayer: My dearest Heavenly Father. Thank you for all the tools you have equipped me with to win in this life. Forgive me for the time spent trying to win for people. Today, I want to start winning for you, Lord. I need your help. I need your strength. I need your game plan God, to win in this life you blessed me with. I want to start winning for you. I know deep down, with you on my side Lord, I will never lose, in the game you put me on this earth for. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen
