God’s Word for Today: Update. Oh what a frustrating but necessary word. This day and age, we are constantly bombarded with updates. From every direction in every application, we must update. Why is the original version not good enough? Why is the old adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” not being adhered to anymore?
Update, when you think about it, is a rather new word. I don’t know if update was used prior to the invention of the radio. Maybe it goes back to some of the original newspapers when there was more information gathered for a particular piece. Thus, it was required to update. As in, “Here is the latest update”. As a matter of fact, one source shows somewhere in the mid-1950s to early 1960s, is when update actually took off as a word. Prior to that, it was a flat line on the bottom of a graph. When do you suppose that graph was last updated?
I have found that one can only ignore updates for so long. When your computer, or your smart phone goes from polite reminders, to constant screaming, it is time to do the latest update. Some, have their electronic devices set on automatic updates. As soon as available, the updates are being installed. Me, the control freak that I am, have my devices set so I have to give permission before they can update. Except Windows. Windows has more control over my computer life than I do. They can secretly throw 20 updates on your computer and you don’t even know it till you try to shut down. Then, you are told to wait while updates are being installed. Of course, this is always when you are in a hurry to do something more pressing. Updates can wait. I gotta go…….
Psalm 51:10. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
When I did my “search” for the word update, in the Bible, I was confident that I would not find today’s word. Update, even in the New International Version of the Bible is nonexistent. Renew is a close second to update. We could split hairs and argue that renew is not a synonym to update. Where would that get us? For the sake of this Word today, please agree with me on renew and update being at least cousins.
The kicker on computer and smart phone updates is the simple fact that if you choose to ignore the update long enough, it is going to come back and bite you. One example would be Adobe. I believe the makers of Adobe ware had to either be very narrow minded, or are extremely ambitious. Narrow minded because there are so many things that didn’t think of, that now need added. Or so ambitious that they are never happy with the current product. But, if you choose to ignore their almost daily updates, sooner or later you are going to try and open an application or attachment, and it will fail because your Adobe does not have the latest update.
Or maybe one of the Apps on your phone rears its ugly head. Most of those updates are for “bug” fixes. You don’t update, the bug shows up. Current bug? In the WhatsApp social messaging thing, voice recordings are coming across barely discernable. Even with your volume cranked on high, you have to smash your phone up against your ear to hear the message. Do an update, life is good again.
The Bible is also being constantly updated. Each and every translation, hundreds of them, just in English. I actually have a Bible called the Parallel Bible that contains 4 different translations side by side. It is a fascinating piece of work. It compares the old school King James version of the Bible with 3 other updates. Check one out some time.
One of the latest “updates” on the Bible is The Story. It takes the whole Bible turns it into a story to read, rather than a book to study. The language is simple. The story flows. It is a good read.
Some people highly criticize this update of the Bible. They believe that the Bible should not be broken down and simplified. They are most correct in one sense. Every word of the Bible is a Word from God. How could one ever take shortcuts with it?
On the other hand, how many people has the book, The Story, reached? How many hundreds of thousands of people who would never sit and attempt to read the Bible as a whole, have picked up The Story and read it? How many lives have been uplifted and updated because they read The Story? You cannot argue with finding Jesus. If you have not read The Story, I encourage you to give it a shot.
Today, know that your life is just like a computer or smartphone. You as a person need a good update once in a while. Especially when you are trying to walk God’s path. A constant update of direction is helpful. No update, no direction, soon, no path to follow. Think of the times you have gone back to the same old habits that were not so good. Those times were always when you delayed the next update. To stay on top of this God thing, we need to constantly update our mind and our heart. And yes, there never seems to be enough time to do a good update. But what is better, update and move forward, or ignore and fail backward? Would be a good choice to accept another update from God, just for you………………
Prayer: Dear Lord, Master of all that is Good. Thank you for constantly giving me more and more. Forgive me for the times I choose to ignore your updates because I am just too busy. Help me to take some time and update my life with your Word. I have so many distractions daily, I need you to work with me on my updates. When I first awake in the morning, and before I shut down at night, may I accept the latest version of the Good Me you want to install. And Lord, maybe during the middle of the day, we can do an update too. In Jesus’, the Life giving Application above all others, name I pray. Amen.
