God’s Word for Today: Tough.
John 5:30. By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
You know that perfect steak you throw on the grill with anticipation of tenderness and a delicious beyond description? You use the perfect mix of spices and added sauces and flavorings. Or, you are old school and simply use salt and pepper. You tediously keep an eye on this steak the whole time it is going from bloody red to the perfect hint of pink. You might even use your latest timing device to count down to the last second of perfection. Maybe you even use a meat probe to tell you the exact temperature of the center of your steak. You disregard every other food presented on the table. This steak is the focal point of all your efforts. This steak is going to make your day. The first bite is inspected on your fork. It is everything you dreamed for and more. You guide it to your anticipating taste buds. Your first bite is going to be an explosion of perfection. Down come your teeth and…………….
Tough. All this anticipation. Every second of preparation. The culmination of efforts has done nothing more than put an overpriced and underqualified piece of beef jerky in your mouth. You try to tell yourself that the flavor is great. Your mind is racing to find something positive as your teeth are now negotiating a way to bite through a perfect replication of shoe leather. Where did you go wrong?
That is where today’s scripture comes in. You can do nothing by yourself. No matter how hard you try. No matter how much effort you have put into something, it is for naught if the origination isn’t from the right place. That piece of steak that you just knew was going to be perfect was never going to be. It had come from a place other than the best of backgrounds. That hunk of beef was cut from an animal that should have been used strictly for hamburger. It was nothing in what you did, except the choice you had made when you grabbed it off the shelf. Tough is tough no matter if you beat it all day with a meat cleaver, it will still be tough.
Hopefully you get a hint of what today’s message is saying. Each choice you make in life will result in something. You can put hours, days, weeks, and even years into an effort. And, if you hadn’t started with the right material to begin with, the end result is going to be nothing short of tough.
Today, know that to reach perfection in anything you do, you must first start with the best. That best always, always comes from God. Anything short of that will lead to disappointment. Don’t make your choices in life to please yourself. Make your choices to please God. Oh what a better bite of life you will have to chew on………
Prayer: Dear Lord, originator of all that is good and pleasing. Thank you for giving me a choice. Forgive me Lord for when I chose wrong. Help me to always put you God, in the lead of my judgment for anything I chose to do. Thru you, and only you Lord, can I expect the greatness you have laid out for my life. In Jesus’, the one who put tough on the cross just for me, name I pray. Amen.
