God’s Word for Today: Too
Job 33:6 I am the same as you in God’s sight; I too am a piece of clay.
Our word for today, too, is going to use a couple of definitions. First definition; too busy, too much to do, too many requests, too little time, and too busy. Sometimes, this world is just too much.
The other day, I messaged a prominent Dr. of Ministry, inquiring about possible employment, but more importantly, I requested feedback on the writing and messages delivered from God’s Word for Today. I was pleased that within 3 days, I received a reply. I don’t know how many messages this man receives in 1 day, but it is probably too many. Here was the Dr.’s reply:
“Appreciated your possibilities. However, with the writing that I am doing, I have all of my time committed. Thank you for asking and sharing. Really appreciate our connection and you!”
Ok, now what do I say? How much between the line reading do I do? What is this man, who has taken his education to one of the highest levels possible, really trying to say?
At first, I read his reply as “I am too busy for you”. This Dr. has so much on his plate that a simple request for his opinion was asking too much. It irritated me a little bit to be brushed off like that. What I read was “Terry, you seem like nice guy, but not on my level. So don’t bother me, I have things to do” Oh how I wanted to strike back with words of anger and correction. Who is this Dr. to tell me his writing is taking up all of his time and he doesn’t want to be bothered by me? My own self-doubts, whispering.
Then I thought about my “quiet time” every morning that I have been blessed with. I typically have a 2-hour window where all distractions have either left for school, work, or are still sleeping. I relish that window of peace and tranquility. I use it to read several daily devotions and hopefully to learn more of God’s Word. I spend time reading other people’s thoughts. Then, I dive into what God has to say for Today. I offer myself as his servant. As God’s writing tool, that you may receive His word and not the word of Terry Carlson. Because truthfully, that character has some definite flaws.
Then, I realized and reflected on the many instances my quiet time for reflection and writing was interrupted, and how I reacted. Typically, my reply has been, “really?”. “Does this have to be done at this very minute?” “Can’t your request wait until I have posted these words?”, or “My current task is more important than anything you could ask of me.” Or even better, “How dare you stand outside my gate, clapping your hands, wanting me to bring you some money because you are hungry.” The list goes on and on. It doesn’t stop. I am sad.
At times, I have become so involved with God’s Word and the writing and studying thereof, in hopes of being a better person, that I completely miss the point. I am too busy “serving God” with my own focus, that I am irritated by the need to serve God via my fellow man.
Today, know this simple fact. The second use of the word too. That definition is in today’s Bible verse. Too, as in also. Every person is God’s child too. No matter how busy you are doing your thing or even God’s thing, He asks that you make time for His family too. Never be too busy that you don’t have time to serve others too. We are all a piece of God’s clay……………
Prayer: Dear Lord, maker and molder of me, and more importantly, everybody else too. I thank you for making my life full. Forgive me for the times I think I am too busy to serve those who you put right in front of me. Today, help me to delete “too busy”, and add “I can help you too”. In Jesus’, who defined too, name I pray. Amen and amen.
