God’s Word for Today: Time
John 7:6 Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do.
Time, the word that captures every waking minute. Time to get up. Time to go to work. Time to go to school. Time to eat. Time to watch our favorite TV show. Time to recharge my cellular battery. Time to sleep. Songs and poems and whole books have been written about time.
My service in the US Navy gave me a new respect for time. Mom and Dad tried very hard to instill in me, the necessity to be on time. But, the Navy took a rather large hammer and permanently beat this time thing into the deepest recesses of my brain clock.
I cannot handle being late. I am a bundle of tied up, stressed to the max, knots, until I arrive at my destination. Once there, typically ahead of time, I then relax and once again enjoy life. Airports and making flights is probably my most anxiety ridden time. I typically arrive 3 hours early, just so I can relax. I don’t mind sitting for hours on the hardest, most ergonomically uncomfortable seat in the world, just so I don’t have to worry about being on time for a flight. I suppose I should work on that.
Music concerts, especially Rock bands have taken this, never on time, to a whole new level. It almost drives me insane. I pay good money to see a band. Why can’t they have the decency to start at the designated time. I have personally witnessed bands starting 2 hours or later than their advertised time. And, once the band starts, the people don’t care. Prior too, the crowd slowly builds momentum of anticipation till it is rolling past even the thickest of barriers. Maybe bands do this on purpose. I believe it is a different reason.
Respect is the word that sits right out there in the middle and demands to be mentioned. Truth be told, it is a total lack of respect. These bands, singers, or whatever the current idolized group is, have absolutely no respect for the crowd. They know you are going to wait like a group of cattle being led to slaughter. You are not going to leave. You are not going to pass on buying their overpriced T-shirts. You are going to wait, and wait, and wait until, they are darn sure ready. And then, just for spite, they are going to make you wait some more. No respect. It is sad.
One question. How can we let another human treat us like that, yet turn around and do the same thing to our own Creator? Yeah, the latest popular group’s music is cool and everything, but it will pass. God never has and never will pass on you. He won’t even make you buy a T-shirt.
Today, know that God has a time table too. He is waiting on you. God will wait for like ever, for you to decide to put Him first, in your life. Currently, maybe you are just too busy. You will get to that God stuff later. But do you really have time? Why would you ever want to make God wait? I have done it more than once. Even in my almost anal desire to always be on time, I have made God wait. I had better things to do. I had no respect for my Creator. One little kicker. Jesus is the only one who walked this earth that knew exactly when His time would be up. The rest of us don’t have a clue. Read today’s Scripture again. You just never know for sure……
Prayer: Dear Lord, who establishes the perfect time for everything. I thank you for always making time for me. Forgive me for when I don’t have time for you, God. I realize that my time could be at any moment. Today, I need to get things right with you, Lord. Then, I can relax and know that we are good. In Jesus’, who gave his time and his life just to cover my time, name I pray. Amen and amen.
