God’s Word for Today: Tickled
2 Timothy 4:3-4. For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the wholesome teaching, but according to their own desires, they will surround themselves with teachers to have their ears tickled. They will turn away from listening to the truth and give attention to false stories.
Tickled is probably one of those words in a long list of words, I would have never imagined using in God’s Word for Today. But, here we are. Let’s see what being tickled is all about.
As a child I was quite ticklish. Someone could simply point a finger in my direction, and I could already feel my nerve endings exploding in laughter. My older brother Bill, was always able to hold me down and tickle me till tears came out. Usually, I deserved it because my mouth had a tendency to overrun itself hurling insults or irritations at him. The tickling would persist until I apologized. Bill would then stop and start walking away. Once again, my mouth would overrun any common sense. Back to being tickled.
The good part about the whole thing was, Bill had a choice. He could have just as easily struck me. Fist punches, kicks, choke holds, and getting slammed to the ground were never in his nature. At least not to his little brother. If we ever boxed or wrestled, it was because we had agreed to do it as a sport. Never did Bill hit me because of anger. Instead, I was tickled till I could no longer breath properly. Now that I think back on it, that was pretty cool.
There are many types of preachers and evangelists in this world. Each, have their way of delivering the message God put in their hearts. Maybe, I should say that God put a message in their hearts, and then as humans with faults, they took over the message for their own benefit.
Some, attempt to bring people to Christ through literal beatings. Fire and brimstone describes this type of message. You gladly go to the Alter and pray for forgiveness, so you will not burn in eternal hell. If one is scared bad enough, one will do most anything. “Fearing the Lord” is taken to a human level that is not so good.
Then, there are those who are just the opposite. Good news abounds. They have learned how to “save” thousands upon thousands of people by telling them what they want to hear. Simply put, they are tickling people’s ears. Many an Evangelist has made a considerable amount of money by continually telling followers what they want to hear. And, if they want their ears tickled more, of course, they need to give to the “cause”.
Each have their own merits. Whether it is thru fear or being tickled, saving souls is saving souls. But, then what is done? Does a person spend the remainder of their days on this great Earth in fear? Or, only hearing what they want to? Is there possibly more?
Today, know that there is much more to what God has in store for your life. Some things are going to hurt, and probably hurt bad. Other things are going to bring a joy to your life that tickle your soul. It is all a great mix. It is your life. The secret is, that you are never. I repeat NEVER, alone. Once you have asked God into your life in the name of His son Jesus, all the battles and all the joys will be taken to another level that is shared with your Creator. Spend just a little more time each day in your Bible. Don’t settle for fear or ears being tickled. God wants you to open the whole package………
Prayer: Dear God, the one who loves me beyond comprehension. Thank you for giving me your Word. Forgive me for the many days your teaching, wisdom, grace, love, and direction gather dust on a shelf. Help me to find time that you and I may work together reading the Bible. In Jesus’, who is my true contact to You, name I pray. Amen and amen.
