God’s Word for Today: Why is it as we get older, we tend to take pleasure in the more simple things in life? Like the first cup of coffee in the morning (most definitely with fresh dairy cream, a raised on the farm thing). Other good things: a Grandchild's laugh, taking a moment to say "Good Morning" to everyone whose path you cross, a slice of fresh baked bread, or maybe a smile waiting for you after a hard day at work. I really could go on and on. I hope as you were reading this, you thought of a few simple things in your life that make you happy.
One time, I was sharing with someone how much I enjoyed cruising down the road on my motorcycle, just taking in the sights, sounds and smells. The person replied that they weren't ready for the just cruise pace, yet. They hungered for thrills and adrenaline rushes. I could relate. I used to enjoy hill climbing and jumping and going as fast as I could possibly go on whatever dirt bike was running at the time.
I now wonder how many of the simple pleasures in life I might have missed, because of my next thrill missions.
Our Christian walk is affected in the same way. I believe youth makes it difficult to stay on God's path. That youth is always seeking something more exciting. When you are first saved, there is no better feeling of relief, joy, and comfort. But, that soon wears off and then it is a maintenance thing. As you age, you come to realize that you are not stuck in the mundane, you are actually growing. You are learning that thrills are temporary, and true joy in life is the simple things.
Today, acknowledge the simple things in life that God blesses you with. Smile and give Thanks......
