God’s Word for Today: Survey
Ecclesiastes 2:11. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.
I like surveys. For some reason I find the outcome of surveys interesting and usually enlightening. I like taking surveys because someone is actually wanting my opinion and that opinion will move numbers one direction or another. To me, surveys are cool.
When we launched the blogs, godswft.org and apalavradedeusparahoje.org, I thought it would be enlightening and enticing to include a survey with each day’s post. The survey was related to the word of the day, and I thought it was a great plan. I spent a few minutes every day making a new survey and even tried to include a related picture in the background of the survey. I would even go on a separate route via my phone and my computer to each blog to take the survey, and get the numbers started. Then, it was a matter of sit back and wait for the input of everybody else and see the results. Good plan and I was very excited.
Somewhere, somehow, and someway this good plan did not quite take hold. The only time I would get any numbers or input besides my own was if I personally asked someone to take the survey so I could make sure it was working properly. There were a few delay bugs once in a while, but otherwise the survey app was working fine. The mechanics of the survey were pretty good. I believed the surveys themselves to be interesting and simple. Why wasn’t anyone taking them? I mean, it wasn’t a matter of just low numbers taking the surveys. It was zero response. Zero, nada, none.
I then knew the exact meaning of today’s Scripture. I had been chasing the wind. It wasn’t really that much toil. Yeah, a few extra minutes each day to add a new survey, translate each question and answer for the Portuguese blog. But even if it had taken me hours each day, I believe the disappointment would have been the same. When one stops chasing the wind and realizes the futility, it is disheartening.
Then, what choice did I have? I was faced with having to do a little self-survey. Why had this failed? What was I doing wrong? Why did people not respond? How could something so exciting and meaningful to me be so completely and utterly meaningless to everyone else? There really was only one answer.
Today, know that there are 2 plans for your life. One plan is yours. The other plan is God’s. If the 2 plans are in sync, life is great. Yes, it is still life with all that life has to hand out, but it is much better that your own plan by itself can ever deliver. Just like my survey. Without God in control, it was simply chasing the wind. Or, maybe even going directly against the wind. Take a survey of the plan that has priority over your life today. Are you toiling to achieve greatness on your own? Or, are you and God working together for the good of you and the greatness of God? Oh how much more you can start gaining today, by including God in your plans....
Prayer: Dear Lord, Master and Ruler of all Greatness, I thank you for this day. Forgive me for the days I insist on doing it “my way”. Help me today to start including You in the plans of my life. I can’t keep chasing the wind God. No matter what I gain, I realize it is nothing without you Lord. In Jesus’, who gave His life for the Goodness of my life, name I pray. Amen.
