God’s Word for Today: Succeed. What does it really mean to succeed? Or, what does it mean to really succeed? Simply movement of one word has already started to determine how one defines the word succeed. On one hand, we are trying to define what succeed is. On the other, simply at what level does one succeed?
That first paragraph contained a whole lot of nothing. Who cares? I mean really? I threw the desire to succeed out the window a long time ago. I am happier with the word maintain. If I can just maintain my current level of existence, then this life isn’t so bad. I wake up every day. I greet my family. I do my morning ritual. I go to work. I survive the day. I come home. I sort through everyone else’s drama. I wind down. I go to sleep. Weekends are where maybe I get to see just a small hint of this succeed thing. When I get to watch my favorite sports on the big screen. Or, when I get to go shopping and not have too much concern for my credit card balance. Maybe it is when I get in a good 18 holes on a Saturday morning. Even better, when I have time and the weather is perfect for a bike ride, (motorized or not). Or, any number of things that give me a glimpse of this word succeed.
Does this sound like your life? Is the measure of your success summed up in the few glimpses of pleasure you find time for on the weekend?
Don’t feel bad. The figure 80% or greater, comes flying at me as the number of people who the upper paragraph defined. I am sorry if it leaned a little more toward the masculine side. That is how I can relate, (sports on big screen, golf, motorcycle riding) maybe I should have thrown in some hunting too. But ladies, you know what I mean, (getting your hair done, maybe even hair, nails, and a massage, shopping, going out for a special meal, date night) all those little things that say, “I am getting a taste of this succeed thing and it is good”. And, maybe that is all us 80% will ever know of succeed.
Or, do you define succeed as owning a share of Trump Towers? Maybe a time share in Vegas. No, true success is owning your own luxury condo in Vegas. Maybe realization of succeed is only accomplished when you are able to buy your first private jet. Each of us actually has to definitions of succeed. What it really means to succeed, and what it means to really succeed. Dang, I just went clear back to the first paragraph. Have I succeeded in writing close to 500 words and not succeeded in saying anything of relevance? I hope you at least can relate to both your visions of succeed.
Psalm 1:1-3. Happy is the man who does not walk according to the advice of the wicked and does not stand on the path of sinners and does not sit in the seat of scoffers. But whose delight is in the Law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night. That person will be like a tree planted by streams of water. A tree that produces fruit in its season. The foliage of which does not wither. And everything he does will succeed.
Good stuff right there. Or maybe, we should say, “God stuff right there.” Now we get a taste of God’s definition of success. It is not measured in “things”. It is measured more in attitude, outlook, reflection, and projection.
After all, let’s say you put in an above average number of 80 years on this planet. You die. How will your success then be measured? Will it be measured by how much money and how many things you have left remaining for your heirs to receive? Or, will it be measured by what your heirs already received from you while you were alive? Attitudes, lessons learned, and love that they can use to define their own succeed.
Here are some examples of God succeed: Holding a baby in your arms. Giving someone who is down, a lift up. Handing a good portion of the money you have in your pocket to someone in need. Sitting together as family, joining hands, and thanking God for His blessings. Having your loved ones sit down with you to watch the big screen. Hearing the birds singing and watching the squirrels play as you tee off on the back nine. Smelling the wonders of God’s creation as you cruise at a comfortable 70 mph down some back highway. Having your family pet begging for a little of your attention. Giving that last piece of cake to someone whose eyes are begging for more. Watching your kids, grandkids, or nieces and nephews give it their best, in their favorite activity. Holding a baby in your arms. The list could never end.
Today, know that whether you look at what it really means to succeed, or what it means to really succeed, they are one in the same. God lays that succeed thing right in front of you every moment of every day. It is your choice if you are going to acknowledge it, take hold of it, and succeed with it…………………
Prayer: Dear Lord, the provider of my succeed. Forgive me for putting a measuring stick on the word succeed. I know God that you give me a chance to succeed every day. Help me to lean a little closer to your Word so I can realize what it truly means to succeed in this life of mine. Also Lord, help me to share some of this succeed with others. In Jesus’, who succeeded in defeating death, just for me, name I pray. Amen.
