God’s Word for Today: Sodden
As seen by the photo, it has been raining on and off the last few days. The accumulation of water in every nook and cranny, all tracks foot and tire, and spots starting to represent the next recreational lake, are signs of sodden. It is wet, it is muddy, it just keeps raining. Soaked, saturated, drenched, and sopping wet are all cousins to sodden and I would just as soon they return home.
Most days on the construction site, if we get a little rain or rain from the previous night, there are various mudholes and places to avoid. But primarily, little paths of dryness magically appear, and one can work his way across the jobsite with minimal attention and effort. But right now, sodden is rampant and it is making everyone dull, torpid, and sluggish.
Come on Sunshine. I want to feel your warmth. Sodden is good if your growing rice, I guess. But otherwise it is now time to dry up for a while and reap the benefits of this blessed moisture.
Proverbs 27:15 A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping of a leaky roof in a rainstorm.
I’m sorry, but when I was researching scripture for the word sodden, this verse jumped out and made me laugh. The leaking roof in a rainstorm definitely fits with today’s word. I will make no comments about the quarrelsome wife. Or, I might find myself discovering all kinds of alternate definitions of sodden.
I don’t quite know why this verse was thrown in with a whole slew of good advice in proverbs, but it is there and we will work with it.
Take the word “wife” out, and we are looking at the sodden effect we can have on others. Enough quarrelling, angry words, negative annotations, or any number of things that come spilling out of our mouths can sodden and saturate others.
Today, whatever opportunities are set in front of you, there is a choice. Are you going to sodden someone with pain? How about trying to lift them up with warm light and a higher, dryer path?
Or, are you suffering from the soaking wet, drenching and sodden attacks of this quarrelsome world. Jesus is the light and the path that is ready to lead you away from the sodden of negative, grief and despair. Give the Light a chance. Amen and amen.
