God’s Word for Today: Salesman. Quite the word to start the day with. And, I know, I probably should have used “sales person”, but hopefully everyone can understand, my use of the word salesman is in no way, gender biased. To me, a salesman can be either male or female. If there is now a politically correct name for someone who is attempting to sell me something, other than salesman, please let me know. I probably won’t automatically switch to the new word to save someone’s hurt feelings, but at least I am feigning interest.
I rather enjoy a good salesman. And, I greatly appreciate an honest salesman. I will admit that I abhor a salesman whose priority is to only make the sale no matter what it costs his customer. I would rather pay a little extra and buy from a salesman who, at least in appearance, has my best interests at heart.
I really enjoy the art of making a good deal with a skilled salesman. I am familiar with most of the tricks of the trade and make it a practice to test a salesman’s skills. Probably the most interesting point in a sales negotiation is when there is a stalemate reached on opposing prices. The salesman has their bottom dollar offer. The buyer has presented their top dollar offer. It is quiet. The rule of thumb here is, whoever speaks first, is the one who ultimately will give in and agree to the other’s amount. Some of these silent battles, I have won. Others, not so much.
Another useful tool in the buyer’s repertoire is the ability to walk away. If one does not like the price, simply start out the door. Especially in the business of purchasing an automobile or motorcycle. If you are willing to pass on “the perfect car”, then you will always win the negotiations. It is difficult when emotions are involved. Or when every feature, including the most important one, color, is exactly what you want, the walking out part is tough. I have also failed at this part occasionally. My weakness is motorcycles.
Maybe the worst trait and trick of a salesman is their fishing techniques when they have set their hook in you. Maybe they grabbed you with a desirable price that you agree to. Then you sit down and start going through the details. All of a sudden, there are “hidden” costs. Or, the promotion expired and they are sorry, but now you have to pay the higher price. This is the exact moment when my blood pressure rises. My face turns red. And, a rather large vein comes popping out of my forehead. This is when I have absolutely no trouble walking out the door. I don’t care if 2 hours of my life is permanently gone. If the salesman goes back on his word just to try a make a little more money, I am done. They typically use this trick with the aid of a manager or supervisor. That way, someone important is convincing you that a mistake was made and it is ok to give up a few more of your precious dollars. Not this time, my friend………..
Romans 12:2. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will.
There are no snake oil salesman tricks when it comes to buying in to God’s plan for you. It is open, honest, up front, and quite real. Accept Jesus Christ as your personal Savior who died on the cross for your sins, and defeated death by being resurrected, and all is well.
Or, buy into every enticement and sales pitch this world has to offer, and see where that gets you. Sooner or later you will discover the hidden costs of this world. Suddenly the price becomes too high. It is then you decide how much of your life you must pay just to maintain your purchase.
Good stuff now. Jesus already paid for you. I suppose one could consider every minister and evangelist a salesman of God. And, sadly, there are some that use salesman tricks to get into your pocket. I am truly sorry if this has happened to you. I bet you are much wiser now. But I also would bet that you are scarred. Sadly, this is the human side, that rears its ugly head instead of what God truly has to offer.
Today, negotiate straight with The Man himself. Acknowledge what Jesus up and did, just for you. Take God’s offer of eternal life. Shake hands with the Good Lord. Make an agreement that you will try your best. Then, start letting Jesus do the negotiating of your life for you. You will never make a better purchase…………..
Prayer: Dear Lord, provider of all that is Good. Thank you for making an offer of eternal life to me. Forgive me for shopping elsewhere. But Lord, there are a lot of good salesman in this world. I need your advice, your strength, and your power to choose what is best for my life. I humbly come to you today God. Help me to select your Grace above all else. In Jesus’, who paid the ultimate price for me, I pray. Amen.
