God’s Word for Today: Sacrifice. First impression? Your thoughts might be, “Oh no, let’s not talk about sacrifice.” It really isn’t a word used very much in this day and age. What in a text, would the word be abbreviated to, “sac”, “sacrf”, or better yet, “scfe”? When it comes down to it, I am confident the next generation will not be using sacrifice in their communications with frequency.
When I hear the word sacrifice, I always think of what a mother naturally does for her children. I have watched time and again a mom pass by the helping of food so her children can have just a little more to eat. I have witnessed a mother give up any semblance of comfort so her child can snuggle up and sleep in the mother’s arms. I could go on and on. Mothers are naturally gifted in this sacrifice thing.
At times, I question whether the next generation of mothers will even have a clue how to sacrifice for their children. Reading all the latest new articles about selfies and their relation to narcissism, it makes one wonder. I mean, by golly, if the experts and psychologists are saying how messed up the new generation is because of ease of access to self-portrayal via cameras on the cellular phones, then it must be true. Right? I almost have to laugh. How did our parents and grandparents view our habits that were new and different from theirs? We were probably headed down the wrong road too. I am confident the next generation will do fine. Something to do with childbirth and bringing a new life into this world, changes the selfie outlook. Sacrifice will stay intact.
Proverbs 21:3. To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
Uh oh, we just hit a small snag here. What is Proverbs 21 trying to tell us? Is God telling us that sacrifice really doesn’t mean that much to Him? Or, since this is Old Testament type stuff, was it simply referring to the sacrifice of animals for the forgiveness of sin? Well, sort of, but not really.
Part of the hold back or hindrance to accepting your God given calling is the fear of having to sacrifice. If you are going to do God’s work, don’t you have to sell everything, completely simplify your lifestyle, give up all the food and drink that you enjoy so much, and just sacrifice almost everything of this world? What do you think? I will tell you what you think. God will show you exactly what you need to do for Him.
When you finally get tired of this world beating you around. Or maybe you are just stagnant, and know there is more to life, you will ask God, “What now Lord?” Then, the Man Upstairs will start working with you on a plan. I cannot tell you what the plan for you is. I cannot tell you if you will have to sacrifice all or nothing. I do know that if and when you become serious about this God thing, you won’t care so much about “things”. It will no longer even be viewed as a sacrifice. Just like a mother never gives it a thought to give her all for her children, so will you be with God. Kind of scary? I hope not. It should be kind of exiting!
Today is a good day to start letting go of whatever is holding you back. We are rolling into this Christmas season with conviction. Take it one step further than the simple refusing to call it Happy Holidays because by gosh, it is Christmas. Start looking at your selfie and decide if this Christmas season might be a good time to connect closer with God and figure out what this doing what is right and just, is all about…………
Prayer: My dearest Lord, I know you sacrificed the most nearest and dearest thing you had, your Son. We are soon going to celebrate His birth. You did a lot of planning and work so I could be forgiven of my shortcomings and sin. Thank you Lord. Forgive me for not getting started sooner. I am afraid of what you are going to ask me to sacrifice for you Lord. Take my hand and be gentle. I am ready to start sharing the blessings you have put in my life. In Jesus’ who came to this world to cover my sacrifice, name I pray. Amen.
