God’s Word for Today: Relax. In this day and age, the word relax is difficult to find. Maybe on a scheduled day off or planned vacation you may have visions of being able to relax. Typically, something gets in the way of this relax thing. You are needed for more important things than trying to relax. It is good to feel wanted, but come on, a person needs their down time.
Way back in the day, a some very good friends of mine and I decided to take the families to the local lake for a few days to enjoy the summer, and relax. What spurred this relax thing to fruition was the bringing of one homemade pontoon boat, back to life. Visions of sitting on this pontoon, fishing, maybe swimming when it got hot, and just plain being able to relax, filled our heads. A little cleaning up, general motor maintenance, gas and a good battery, and we were ready to go.
I cannot recall any of the exact plans. I just know that we loaded everything up, including some very excited kids, and headed north by west to Swanson Lake. Because of some doubts to the availability of fish, not doubts to fishing abilities, plenty of food was brought along. We had everything we needed. For the next few days, life was going to be the definition of relax.
We picked out a perfect camping spot with plenty of shade and soft sand for our tents area, and excellent access to the beach and lake. Then, when family was well established and in their lake survival area, we headed out to launch the pontoon boat and bring it to our area. If memory serves me correctly, that all went pretty smooth. First day success. Relax was well into its realization.
The next day, we loaded up on the pontoon ready for a day filled with adventure. Boat motor fired up well, life vests on persons where required and needed, let the relax begin. We headed out far enough into the lake to where we thought fishing, and relax would be good. And it was. Until, those of us at one end of the boat realized that the level of the water was beginning to get higher relative to the depth of the boat. Simply put, we were slowly sinking. At first, it was the common thought to blame the Captain of the ship for not putting the plugs in one of the pontoons. One side was fine, the other was beginning to list quite noticeably. We had no means to transmit “Mayday, mayday”, (this was when the word cellular phone wasn’t even in the dictionary yet). So, we fired the motor back up and headed to shore.
A rather humorous observance was then made. When we were moving, the passing over the water caused a natural suction affect that drained the sinking pontoon of its accumulated water. As long as we kept going in a forward motion, the boat was good. If we stopped, we sank. There was no possible relax for this boat.
There are many other stories tied to our adventure for those few days at the lake. The one shared today, turned out to be a rather large crack in the forward end of the port pontoon. It was a crack that we spent the next 3 days trying to patch. Continual work of patching, testing, leaking, moving forward, and draining were practiced. Not much relax. Some frustration. But truthfully, a whole lot of fun. Remember, I said this adventure involved some very good friends and family. That was the important part. That is what life and relax is all about……………
Psalm 116:7. Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.
If you look at the picture that accompanies today’s word, I believe you will see the definition of relax. Or, in Paraguay terms, “tranquillo”. There is no better example of relax than what this child is portraying. Somewhere in life, we grow out of the ability to simply relax like a child. I believe it is words like, responsibility, growing up, pain, guilt, sorrow, hard work, chores, and so many other words that intrude into our ability to relax.
I suppose that is why tobacco, alcohol, and other mind altering drugs are the norm. They tend to numb our senses to the point of being able to relax. We seek an outside source to enable us to set aside all the thoughts, feelings, and life lessons that are keeping us from being able to relax.
The secret here, is the realization between outside source and internal source. One will never know what it is to relax if you have to depend on something found of this world. The secret is inside. “Return to our rest, my soul” is internal. The child in the picture doesn’t yet know the difference between external and internal relax methods. This child just knows that at that exact moment, life was very good. Relax was optimal. Things are simple.
Today, know that you too, can find relax as simple and as pure as a child does. Quit trying to use outside sources. Instead, turn everything over that is preventing your relax, to the Lord. Give Him your struggles. Give Him your stress. Give Him your pain. Give Him a chance. All you have to do to find relax is focus from the inside and realize that the Lord has been good to you……………
Prayer: Dearest Lord who can handle everything. Thank you for your Goodness. Thank you for your Grace. Thank you for putting inside me a Spirit that rules my soul. Forgive me for looking outside for a little relax. Help me today to focus from the inside. I know Lord, if I just focus on you and all of your good, relax will come home and stay. In Jesus’, who provides the relaxing Spirit for my soul, name I pray. Amen.
