God’s Word for Today: Prayer
Luke 5:15-16 Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
Yesterday, in the USA, was National Day of Prayer. It is intended as a time when the masses gather to pray for our nation and its leaders. One day out of the year, we recognize as a time to pray for our Country. I immediately want to follow with the comment, “Why only one day” and go off on a rant. But, my other side is saying, “One day is better than zero days”. It is a battle.
So today, is the day after, National Day of Prayer. Was anything accomplished? Did God hear our prayers and respond? Is our current President changing direction today toward a Godlier approach? Are Hillary and Donald going to start running their campaign with a more Christian type agenda? Did our prayers affect their future decision making? What do you think? If your answer is a resounding “no”, we have some work to do.
The residents of Brazil, Paraguay, and Mexico have the same concerns as us Americanos. There is corruption abound. Some of it very well hidden. Other deeds quite obvious. What is one to do? Why do our leaders seem so very distant from God? Can Politics and Religion even coexist? Lots of questions, are there correct answers?
It is quite obvious that whatever Nation we call home; the Leaders need our help. A simple vote cast once every 4 years is not enough. One day a year of half organized prayer, will help. Daily prayer for our politicians will help even more.
Brazil right now is going through an impeachment process of their current candidate. USA has pretty much dismissed their current President and are trying to decide which candidate is the lesser of the two evils. Kind of shameful for both countries. A lot of energy being spent on potential hope of repairing our future.
Crowds gather everywhere. A vast amount of energy is spent on political rallies and speeches. Many, many words are released to attempt to gain support. Emotions are brought to a peak. Some good, some not so good. Why can’t a few of those words be directed to God. Has anyone ever witnessed a President (USA, Mexico, Paraguay, Brazil, or any other country) stop in the middle of their “look at my words” speech and asked God for guidance? I would like to hope so, but I have never been blessed with witnessing this experience. I might have to Google the subject.
Are our Leaders afraid of persecution if they even slightly bow their head in prayer, in public? A simple argument could be: “Jesus prayed with and for the people, look where that got him.” When did being a Leader and being a follower of God become such a separate necessity? I can understand separation of Church and State. Churches have their own problems and faults. We have managed to make our churches just another political agenda for what we agree with and to heck with everyone that doesn’t think the same. It is sad.
Today, catch this little secret. Gathering together in crowds can be good. Praying together in crowds is even better. More important, withdrawing to a quiet place to pray alone. Have a little chat daily with God. It is as simple as that. No scheduled or ritual words necessary. Just talk. Say exactly what is on your mind. Share with Him your concerns for your Country, for its Leaders, for this World. Have yourself a little private, God help us, campaign. Good stuff right there………
Prayer: Dear Lord, my Creator and my Father. Thank you for making an open door policy that I might visit with you. Forgive me for all of the words I direct to everyone else, but I fail to share with you too. Today, I want to change that. Today I know that my Country, also needs my God. In Jesus’, whose campaign for Grace is still going strong today, name I pray. Amen and amen.
