God’s Word for Today: Politics
Matthew 23:1-4. Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
Sound familiar? Currently, I am following 2 sets of political unrest. This year, is election year for USA’s next President. This year is also a year of possible upheaval of the powers that be, in Brazil. Each have their own version of dishonesty, personal agendas, corruption, and deceit. Daily, the people are subject to a lot of “hot air” speeches of, either people trying to save their ass, or people trying to get into the position to benefit their own pockets. Where did we as a whole go wrong? Why are you and I having to carry all the load while the masters of politics toot their own horn?
When Jesus entered the Temple courts after His glorious entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) he observed a scenario that disgusted Him. He promptly started overturning tables and benches of the money changers and those selling doves. The Temple was supposed to be a house of prayer and a place to benefit your life. But due to one little factor (money) it had turned into something similar to a Midway of a Carnival at the County Fair.
It appears that our Government has turned into the same thing. As you walk down the Midway of politics, each official is calling to you to buy into their little game. They are like the carnies who won’t give up till they have your attention. “Look at the huge prizes we have to offer. We will only take all of your money that we can get our hands on. The game is rigged, but you are welcome to try anyway.” Big bundles on our shoulders.
It is amazing, and sad, at the same time how easily we blame. Solutions to our problems like “impeach the President”, “arrest and lock up those politicians that have committed crimes” (would there be any left to govern?). “Build walls, deport those who might be a threat.” And the list goes on. Blame is so very much easier than say, self-analysis?
I will give people credit, at least they are offering possible solutions. Albeit twisted and wrong solutions, but attempts at repair none the less.
So, our Countries have many problems. Some Countries worse than others. Or are they really? Isn’t the world as a whole, somewhat of a screwed up mess? Can none of us get it right? Are we going to forever be stuck pointing fingers at the problems and avoiding the only solution?
The solution is simple, my world of friends. Pray.
You see, the problem is not with everybody else in the world. The problem isn’t with any one Country. The problem isn’t with the government in any given country. The problem stems from each and every one of us. As an individual, you have more power and control over your life than anyone else. When it comes to your greeting day at the Pearly gates, the President of your Country isn’t going to be standing there with you. None of the people or groups of people you blame on this screwed up world, are going to be an excuse for the book that is opened for the review of your life. It will be you, Jesus if you invited Him, and God.
The solution, to the problems of this world, run in the same order. First, you. How do you, make you right? Pray. Pray like there is no tomorrow. Pray to fix you. Pray in Jesus name that God takes control of your life. Then, pray for others. Pray for those who you don’t understand. Pray for the wisdom to support and choose the right person in every level of politics. Take those daily subjects of bad, that consume hours of social media, radio, and TV time and pray for them. Pray that God spares this world. Sound lame? Sound like words you have heard before from people who have their own gaggle of problems? Did you pray then? Or was it easier to go on blaming others? Are prayers too much work? Why can’t the simple solution of prayer be accepted as the fix for this world? Why would we rather be money changers and dove peddlers? Will we ever carry our own burden? This Jesus thing sounds OK, but why don’t we have time for it?
Think about it. Jesus knew what was coming. He felt the burden and load of everyone’s sins the night before He was crucified. Jesus felt the weight of our faults so deeply, He sweated blood. What did Jesus do? He still prayed for you and I. When Jesus was hanging on the cross, beaten and bleeding, what did He do? Jesus prayed for us. So, when we wake up from our comfortable bed and get ready for that first sip of coffee, is it too much to pray for others of this world. When we are sitting at a table overflowing with food that is going to make us miserable because we ate so much, is there no excuse to take a moment and pray? When we survived another day at work (not involving a cross and nails thru our hands and feet) is it really that hard to pray? As we lay our head on a pillow of comfort for the night, cannot our last thoughts be directed toward our Maker? I am not pointing fingers; I am talking to the mirror.
Today, if anything, take this one thought. You, who have read this far, are vastly outnumbered. You, who have accepted Jesus as your Savior are extremely outnumbered. God’s Army per capita has never been smaller. But through prayer, serious, dedicated, and all out, prayer, God’s Army can overcome any of the world’s problems. He just needs your support. God needs your prayer. Want to fix politics? Be a politician for Jesus…………
Prayer: Dear Lord, I am overwhelmed. So much anger, so much discord, so much hate, so much greed. You have seen this in the world since you made man. Forgive me for my part that fails. I pray today that I may first, be the best me. Then Lord, together, we can start working on making this world a little more welcome to your Word. In Jesus’, who gave me the only real political solution, name I pray. Amen and amen.
