God’s Word for Today: Peeve
John 8:47. Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.
The definition of peeve is; a cause of annoyance. Somewhere and somehow, somebody decided it would be good to put the description “pet” with the word, peeve. Maybe that person had such an obsession with their list of peeves, that had to categorize them as continual favorites just like a pet.
I seem to have a decent list of pet peeves. Different things that seem to get under my skin and want to turn a happy day into an explosion of anger. I just got done deleting 300 words I had typed because I took off on a meaningless journey telling you about just one, of my peeves. Then, I read through my words and realized that I was probably scratching at other peeves. Like the peeve of having to listen to people complain about what other people did or didn’t do. Oh man, is that annoying or what?
The Church seems to throw out its own set of peeves. Maybe a first time visitor to your Church happens to sit in your favorite spot you sit in every Sunday. Or, someone enjoys raising their hands in open praise and you were taught that is a no no. Oh man, could this list go on for like, ever? Even the use of the word “like” in so many phrases is a peeve in itself. Like, whatever. I imagine you have some peeves of your own when it comes to your view on how to worship God.
The Scripture today is cut and dry. If you belong to God, you hear what He has to say. If you don’t “hear” His words, you don’t belong to God. My friend, if you have read this far in today’s message, guaranteed, you belong to God.
You may feel that you have stepped way past the boundary of God’s peeves. I can recall many of my actions through life that would be a major annoyance to God. I probably still cross that line every day. Not because I intentionally mean to. But, because I am a human with many human imperfections. I really try to get it right. And then, someone crosses my peeve threshold and off I go, all annoyed.
Today, note a couple of things. First, the religious leader of Jesus times could not hear what Jesus was saying because they were too busy letting their peeves control their thoughts. Jesus was an annoyance because He was teaching everything that took them out of their comfortable, above others, lives. How dare Jesus say that God loves and forgives everyone. How dare Jesus talk to the sinners, no less forgive and love them.
Second thing to note today. You belong to God. You have been on His list since you were born. Because of Jesus, those peeves that seem to jump out of you are forgiven. You have the ability to hear God because you are of God. Now, start working on your peeve of others as God has done for you………………
Prayer: Dear Lord, who forgives my annoyances. Thank you for choosing me. Forgive me for even beginning to think that I am not good enough for You. Help me to work on those things I know annoy you, God. And, because of your Grace, help me to forgive those who cross my peeve. In Jesus’, whose Truth annoyed those who couldn’t hear, name I pray. Amen.
