God’s Word for Today: Over. Let me repeat, over and over and over. This word is hard to use and say only one time. When we use the word over, it really wants to duplicate itself. That is, if used in the repetitive type context. The word over can be used in so many different ways, I believe we will spend the whole week on over. So, if you don’t like the GWFTs that run in a one week series, you are just going to have to get over it. Of course, I am just kidding. I cannot in any way force you over to my way of thinking. I can only present God’s case and you can decide if you want to rule over your world, or maybe let God rule over your life.
When researching for this week’s word of over, I found that in 72 of the GWFT just this year, I have used the word over in some form or another. I can understand using and, the, if, or, for, may, in, so, and all the other common words needed to build a sentence, but why the frequent use of over? I may need to analyze my particular form of writing.
The one form of over I really don’t care for is someone ruling over someone else. Or, your boss is over you in position and pay. Pay I guess is understandable if in an appropriate percentage, based on skill and experience. But as for one person thinking they can rule over another, I tend to not prefer that view. One person can work for another person but should one feel that they are over and above anyone else? I believe the best type of boss or manager is one who doesn’t consider himself/herself over anyone. Instead they should be working with their people.
The five years I spent in the US Navy were fun, educating, and very memorable. The best commanders I ever worked with did not use the word over. They knew what their job was and what they were best at and they let me do what my job was and what I was best at. I also liked the fact that through hard work and application of knowledge, you could advance. With various limitations of course, which could be negative in a sense, but overall, there was the opportunity to better your position. This also led in part to my decision to leave the military after five years. I didn’t like the fact that just because someone had been there a long time, it gave them the opportunity to rule over me. Of course, being young and ignorant didn’t help. Almost every job in the real world has the same pecking order. Sooner or later you will be in a position where your boss’s level of intelligence is in question and only through luck or family ties, are they in control of your livelihood. I will have to get over that fact.
Zephaniah 3:17. The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”
I will admit that I had forgotten there was even a book in the Bible with the name Zephaniah. When I searched the word “over”, this verse was one of many. I even questioned the existence of Zephaniah then. Believe it or not, I had to go and get my bible and confirm this book was in it. Something about the internet now days, makes one question validity. Now, I suppose I will need to spend a little time reading Zephaniah to see what it is all about.
For now, let’s put God and the word “over” together. Is that part of our reluctance to live for God? Do we hesitate to let God be in charge of our lives because it is presented as God ruling over us? Are we bucking the system by denying God because we don’t like the idea of anyone “over” our lives, we want to be in control? Quite the concept. I had never thought about much previous to today. Do I take my own path because I am independent, hard headed, and don’t want anybody ruling over me? I think I am on to something here. Overruled is an ideal that I don’t like.
Today, read this verse from Zephaniah again. Read especially the first sentence. God is with you. It doesn’t say God is over you. He can be right there beside you. A life with God is not Him ruling over your world. A life with God is intended to be a relationship together. Instead of viewing God being over you, today start thinking of God being with you…………..
Prayer: My Heavenly Father who is beside me. I thank you for making it possible for me to be on the same level with you. I thank you for Jesus who started the concept of working with you God, not working for you. Pretty cool Lord. You love me so much that you are willing to be in my world. And, you do this for me Lord because of your Grace. I pray today in Jesus’ name who rules over death. Amen.
