God’s Word for Today: Open.
Proverbs 1:20. Out in the open wisdom calls aloud, she raises her voice in the public square;
“The mind is like a parachute, it only works if it is open…….”, was a quote that a friend shared yesterday. What a profound statement. Maybe it has been around for like ever and this is the first time I have read it. Or maybe, I have seen it or heard it before, but my mind was closed and I did not store it in my library of wise words.
Open is a good thing, most times. Especially if we are talking about our mind. The only way to acquire wisdom and retain said knowledge is to open up that gray matter in your head and absorb. Two ears, one mouth, I will say no more.
Open can also be a not so good thing. If a container is left open for a very short period of time, ants will find it. They have a built in radar that seems to tell them exactly when a luxurious treat is open for their consumption. Well, at least one ant does and then, he must have like one million Facebook ant friends that he sends a map to, on Messenger. Actually kind of amazing when you think about it.
But, an open mind can have a tendency to let the Formicidae (ant family) of bad thoughts and bad advice enter in. Then, for some reason, you close your mind. You have closed the lid before you cleaned out all of the ants. Now, the little ant family makes a home and continues to feed.
Your closed mind is convinced that you don’t need a parachute any longer. Your closed mind still contains those ants. You have your opinions. You know what is right. It is other people that have faults. They are the ugly ones. They are the reason there is hate in this world. It can’t be you, why need an open parachute when your perfect knowledge is keeping you safe?
Do you understand what is being said here?
Probably the nastiest and most disheartening thing I have seen and read lately is the judgment of our First Lady (President’s wife) Michelle Obama. And truthfully, it has been for the last 8 years, but the degree of hate and ugliness has been kicked up a notch. I don’t know why for sure. Do closed minds have the need to tear others down? If you knock enough people over, will that soften your landing on the ground when your parachute of a mind fails to open? It is sad and it is wrong. I will say no more.
God’s Word for Today has a mission to bring the Good News to everyone. If someone is offended by the words today, then that is good. It means that your mind might still have a chance to open up and receive the Good News that God loves everyone. And, because of Jesus’ sacrifice, God asks that you love others just like He loves you.
Today, it is time to open up the parachute of your mind. There is an unlimited source of knowledge waiting for you. It is called the Bible. It is called reading daily devotions. It is called attending the Church that God has called you to. It is called loving others as God has loved you. An open mind that is readily absorbing God’s Word, has no room to let the ants of this life come in and destroy. An open, cleansed, and clear mind can receive unlimited wisdom…………
Prayer: Dear Lord, protector of me. I thank you for giving me the ability to land safely. Forgive me for the times my mind has stayed closed. Forgive me for the times I have let the ants of life consume the good you blessed me with. Help me today Lord to keep my mind open and to stay on the track of continually receiving your wisdom. And Lord, help me to love others with the same degree you have chosen to love me. In Jesus’ who made available the parachute of Wisdom and Grace, name I pray. Amen and amen.
