God’s Word for Today: Vicariously
What a mouthful of a word for today. Vicariously is to think, imagine, or experience life through the actions of others. I tend to live vicariously when I read a good book, watch a good movie, or as a spectator of a sporting event. Much of our entertainment is based on the attempt to grab our thoughts and providing a vicarious experience. Thus, we can, even for a moment, escape from our daily lives.
I never thought of myself as trying to live my life through the actions and events of others. But, as I find myself scanning through numerous posts. And since I was provided the statistic that for 2016, I “liked” over 20,000 posts, (average 55 “likes” per day), it was time to question if this word vicariously was overtaking my life.
I already knew that through good books by writers such as Louis L’Amour, Stephen King, Dan Brown, and a few others, I could easily disappear from reality. The same with many a good movie. Gone was I. But, I never considered browsing through other’s posts a being a form of living vicariously. I might have to ponder that one for a while. What do you think?
John 14:6. Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus even asked us to live vicariously through him. Although, unlike living our lives through some other earthly being, Jesus was referring to an eternal way of life. A good book ends after a few hundred pages. A movie after an hour or two. And a post only a few seconds. But Jesus is providing a way of life that will be extended way beyond your body’s existence.
Today, enjoy the entertainment and happiness shared by others, but strive to live vicariously through Christ. Amen and amen……………..
