God’s Word for Today: Impeach
Proverbs 3:30 Do not accuse anyone for no reason—when they have done you no harm.
Yesterday afternoon/evening, I was privy to watch the impeachment proceedings in the Lower House of Brazil’s Congress. It was 6 hours of Lawmakers tooting their own horns, prior to stating a simple “yes” or “no”. 5 hours and 55 minutes of words spoken, fists pumped, and chants sang, are gone. Maybe 5 minutes will be remembered for a short time.
There were 513 votes to be cast determining whether to impeach Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. That was 513 politicians simply having to approach a microphone and give their “sim” or “não”. But, politicians being politicians, almost every one of them had a captured audience that would have to hear their words of self-proclaimed wisdom. I can’t say as I blame them. Who doesn’t want to say “hey, look at me” every once in a while.
Thus, it took 6 hours to accomplish what could have been easily done in less than 1 hour. In the end, 367 voted to impeach the President. This was 5% more than the needed 66% required for impeachment.
Now, proceedings to impeach President Rousseff will move forward to the Senate, and if passed there, she will have to step down from office for 180 days and face an impeachment trial. I can already envision many, many more words being spoken. Sadly, many of those words will be directed for self-promotion rather that serving others. In the end, what really will have been gained?
So, USA, know that you aren’t the only Country filled with politicians that know how to shout a lot of hopeful words of nothing, to get your vote. Honestly, the percentage is about the same. 70% or more have “self-serve” in mind instead of serving the people. But, isn’t that just human nature?
Of all the people who walked this earth, Jesus should have been the one that tooted his own horn the loudest. Jesus could have stood on any mountain He wanted and ruled the world. The devil offered Jesus that very option.
Jesus instead chose to serve. His agenda was not “self”. Jesus’ agenda was to serve you and me. Jesus didn’t need to scream and shout to get the world to hear his words. Jesus simply walked from one place to another, calmly sat down and spoke words that are still living and giving those who choose Him, wise direction.
How many of the 6 hours’ worth of words spoken last night will be put in a book that will be the rule and guide of Faith for the next 2000 years? Are any of the increased volume to gather attention bouts of oxygen expulsion, going to lead to eternal life? I don’t think so. Most of the words spoken last night, have already gone where they belong, into thin air.
Today, know that we humans are kind of a screwed up mess. Given the chance, we have the odds of 70% or better of choosing the wrong path. Yes, the forces of bad, evil, corruption, and just no good, are that strong. Also know that to be in the less than 30% who live with kindness, love, compassion, joy, and fellowship, you require some help. Jesus calmly and quietly gave His life just so you could choose to be in that “I am going to serve others” group. It is your choice whether to toot your own horn of life that no one really listens to mainly because they are focused on their own tooting. Or, to simply cast your vote of “yes”, I am going to follow the path of Jesus. Which choice is going to carry you farther, Jesus “no”, or life eternal, Jesus “yes”……………
Prayer: Dear Lord, creator of every human mind. Thank you for letting me choose yes or no. Forgive me for everything I have done in my life to impeach you, Lord. I know the difference between good and bad. Help me to spend more time with good. In Jesus’, who didn’t get a fair trial and scripted judicial proceedings before He died for me, name I pray. Amen and amen.
