God’s Word for Today: HIGHWAY
The previous post of God’s Word for Today was a poem discussing a path that one has decided is not the best route. Truthfully, our lives in this day and age can hardly reference a path. We are on a highway always going somewhere, speed undetermined and at times unlimited. At this rapid pace, we are longing for the next rest stop.
There are many songs that reference Highways and the way our lives travel on them. As an AC/DC fan from youth, Highway to Hell comes to mind. Not the best title to refer to on a God’s Word Post, but worth recognizing. We have all at one time or another, maybe even now, been on such a Highway:
Living easy, living free
Season ticket on a one-way ride
Asking nothing, leave me be
Taking everything in my stride
Don't need reason, don't need rhyme
Ain't nothing I would rather do
Going down, party time
My friends are gonna be there too
We have all lived it. Most survived. Some didn’t. Others can’t seem to get out.
Then, we have the more Carefree Highway, Ventura Highway, Highway 20 Ride, Highway Song (Blackfoot gotta like), or maybe best, Sunshine Highway where the Dropkick Murphy’s reference trying to turn it around. This is where the others are.
Somewhere on life’s journey, we also experience Life is a Highway. More ne’er do well type ride you can take all night long. And, if you are going my way, I want to drive it all night long. Tom Cochrane had a few things to say about that:
Life's like a road that you travel on
When there's one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend and sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind
There's a world outside every darkened door
Where blues won't haunt you anymore
Where brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore.
So, that song almost got to the destination we are heading on today. But the one that takes us home is Life’s Highway by Steve Wariner. It doesn’t contain the thrill of AC/DC’s highway, or confusion of Dropkick Murphey’s, and a deeper definition than what Tom Cochran could do. Here is what Steve had to say:
There is hope with every turn
A bridge to build A bridge to burn
It's open new Never go astray
On life's highway.
Step by step Round and round
Never knowing where we're bound
From the cradle to the grave
On life's highway.
Isaiah 49:11 I will turn all my mountains into roads, and my highways will be raised up.
What exactly is God’s Word trying to say today beside referencing some good songs that take us down a highway one direction or another with some just going in a round-a-bout?
We all have our own highway. Sometimes our highway is crowded, jam packed, and lacking any real sense of direction. Other moments we share the highway with that special someone and the journey is good. There is also the lonely highway that throughout life keeps showing up on our map. Which highway are you on?
We shouldn’t focus so much on which direction our highway is going. Or, how many hills, curves, detours or wrecks fill our highway. We just need to know that God is always with us. Guiding us when we ask. Protecting us when we have Faith. And waiting for us when we are lost in the wrong direction.
God is ALWAYS with us on our Highway….. Amen and amen.
