God’s Word for Today: Guard
Proverbs 4:13-17 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life. Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way. For they cannot rest until they do evil; they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble. They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.
Good stuff right there. If you read no more of today’s message, at the very least read today’s Scripture again. The instruction it is referring to can only mean the Bible itself. If you are wise, you will find a way to make its instruction direct your life. You will have to guard it. Many will try to take it away from you. Personally, I don’t know if anyone has taken my good instruction away from me. I have chosen the wrong path on my own. Can’t blame anyone else but numero Uno.
Yesterday, we talked about trash. The referral might have been a little confusing. Sometimes what God has to say, goes through my brain, takes a little curve, and then out my fingers to the computer keyboard. There is so much to say. So much to explain. But, I have tried to set limits and trim the fat from the daily messages. Now, each day, you receive 700 words in English. Spanish and Portuguese tend to stretch it out a little more. But, forgive me if some days the words are a scrambled mess.
The statement from yesterday about each and every one of us either being trash, or one step away from trash might have been a little harsh. We probably should have mentioned the trash that has a tendency to accumulate in our hearts. There might be the most microscopic spec of trash in our hearts. Left unchecked, it is going to grow. It is going to start to stink. It will soon be shown to others.
Each and every day, I have to battle the trash in my heart. My heart has been completely cleaned out and purified a few times, but because I don’t guard it well enough, some of the trash returns. God and I are working on it. I am trying to clean my heart out to make more room for His Holy Spirit. It is a work in progress. Can you relate?
There are plenty of people out there wanting you to fail. Yes, it is sad. Good example, and I suppose I will refer to it on thru November, is the current election campaign. Everybody has their opinion. Most have their favorite. And, the garbage flys. For many, not to the degree of wickedness and violence, but all at least to the level of making someone stumble.
Today, take a good look at your heart. If needed, do a little Spring cleaning. Before you let your opinions and thoughts fly out of your mouth. Prior to comments being shared via your phone or computer, put a guard in place. Ask the Good Lord if what you are about to say is part of His plan. Check to see if your words are full of encouragement, helpfulness, joy, happiness, and love. Or, are they leaning more toward bitterness, anger, and trash that is only meant to harm others. What really have we gained in life by causing those we don’t like, to stumble. Is the wickedness and violence that spews from our hearts any better than outright physical infliction? Something to think about………….
Prayer: Dear Lord, creator of my heart and all that is Good. Thank you for the capacity to love, to be kind, to be considerate, to spread joy and laughter, to be more like You. Forgive me for the times I have not guarded the blessings I was born with and have let the negative take over. Help me Lord to cleanse my heart. I really do want to share my life with you God. In Jesus’, who gave us a way to cleanse our hearts, name I pray. Amen and amen.
