God’s Word for Today: Future
Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Back in the day, (30 years ago) a song came out titled, “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades”. The writer was Pat MacDonald. His band, Timbuk3 released the song as the opening track for their debut album. If you think about it, the song is rather ironic, as it was the only major hit the band ever had. They most likely didn’t have to wear their shades for very long.
I imagine this song was used for countless High School graduation’s “class song”. What better time than graduating High School does one view their future as extremely bright? The world is just waiting for a graduate’s vast wisdom and foresight. There is no stopping youth and ignorance. The past was a quick blur of growing up. The future is going to be an adventure of mass proportions that no one has ever seen. Maybe because they were wearing too dark of shades?
Then, somewhere between 18 and like 40, reality settles in. The future was bright. Hopes and dreams were limitless. Nothing could stop you. But one day you wake up, and your outlook has changed. Somewhere along the line, the world grabbed you and was rather rough. Your bright future was put on hold. Survival had taken over. What happened? Where in the heck did I lay my shades?
So, the world is tough. You got a little beat up. You seem to be in a rut of never ending simple survival. Life is routine. A few good things have happened. A few bad things have happened. To heck with the future. Today is challenge enough.
Here is where today’s little secret kicks in. Because God chose you, sometime in your youth, you were introduced to Jesus. Whether through Bible School, weekly Church attendance, a week of Revival meetings, or maybe a Youth Group trip, Jesus became a part of your life. It was an event that, little did you know, would change your future forever.
At the time, maybe the high of Jesus as your Savior only lasted one day, one week, or maybe even a month. Then, it was back to life as usual. Great future ahead. Where are those shades? This Jesus thing was pretty cool, and felt really good for a little while, but you had things to do. The world hadn’t beat you up yet. Your future was full of discover and conquer.
The best part is, the seed was planted. Little did you know that one day, you were going to stop in the middle of your self-destroying life, and look to that seed. You realized that the only way to survive the darkness and weight of this world, was to start cultivating and growing the gift that had been planted, years ago.
Today, know that it is still possible to need shades. After living in the darkness of this world for so long, you need time for your eyes to adjust. There are many scars that inhibit your sight. But, you can still see good enough to read today’s Scripture again. Nothing. I repeat, nothing will ever separate you from God’s love. People will try. They will tell you a different story. Every time someone wants to destroy your bright future, turn to this scripture. Have your shades ready. God’s light, God’s plans for you, God’s never ending love for you, is unbelievable bright………
Prayer: Dear Lord, maker of me. Thank you for not giving up on my future. Forgive me for all that time I spent going in a, not good, direction. I appreciate the fact that you love me so much you have waited for my return. Now Lord, I want to spend today with You. And, let’s start working on tomorrow too. In Jesus’, who planted himself into my future, through His ultimate sacrifice, name I pray. Amen and amen.
