God’s Word for Today: Follow. “Go West my son” has been a favorite saying of mine for a long time. I used to think it would have been great to be living in the time when the Wild West of the USA was settled. Oh the adventures. Even more extraordinary would be the stories you would have.
If you think about the thousands of people that had the nerve to cross the great Mississippi River and head west into the vast unknown, it is pretty amazing. There were stories of riches, stories of fertile and free land, stories of well, stories. Many a family pulled up its comfortable roots in the east for a chance to go out West and follow their dreams. Many made well on their dreams. Many followed the wrong person, or the wrong dream and did not fare so well. Many found out their dream was a nightmare, turned around, and followed their tracks back home.
I suppose some was based on luck. Whoever you just so happened to choose to follow out west determined where you ended up. There were some paths that ended up well used and dependable. Those who followed the trail bosses who knew the best and safest routes did well. Those who followed a whim or a beautifully painted tall tale sometimes paid the price.
Still others followed no one. They choose to strike off on their own and discover new and unexplored paths. Some were successful. Others, well, not so much.
When it all comes down to it, man has been following his dreams all over the world. There isn’t much land left that man has not stepped foot on. The wild frontier is no more. What dream is there left to follow? Outer space? Kinda has its limits at the moment. But still, there are so many directions and so many dreams that can be followed. The adventure of life delivers a following of its own.
Matthew 10:38. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
Well, Jesus, thanks a lot. That verse is rather blatant and abrupt. I will give it credit though. Jesus doesn’t beat around the bush. He makes a simple, clear cut, statement. Either you follow Jesus, or you don’t. That isn’t so bad. But the not being “worthy” part kind of hurts. Maybe Jesus should have reviewed this little text before He hit the send button. Who is Jesus to say if you are worthy or not. I believe I have been worthy of many things. Oh my God, have I learned some lessons.
Jesus isn’t judging you like Santa Claus. He doesn’t have a naughty or nice list. Jesus does not review the list once a year to see if you are worthy of a present or not. It is your choice who or what you want to follow. It is strictly up to you following whatever dream you have. To decide if Jesus is going to be a part of it or not is your choice.
Right now, this Christmas Eve, might be an excellent time to review who and what you are following. Maybe you feel like you aren’t following anything. You are just daily going through the motions. Life is OK, not good, definitely not GREAT, but ok, will work. Less hassle. After all, if you follow the wrong path, who knows what might happen.
Today, know that by following Jesus, there is no wrong path. You have already found plenty of those on your own. Take a few moments and reflect on if what I say is true. When you choose, or have chosen, to follow this Jesus thing, is when your dreams will come to fruition. Dreams you didn’t even fathom you could follow. Dreams that will lead to an amazing story. There is a star in the East on Christmas morn, rise up shepherd and follow……..
Prayer: My Lord, my God, today I choose to follow you. On this eve of the greatest gift ever given, I realize I have followed too many wrong paths for too long. Forgive me Lord. I really, truly want to be worthy. I know I have failed. But Lord, you covered for me. Through Jesus, I can now follow your Path. Your path God, is some good stuff. Thank you for giving me Jesus to follow. In Jesus’, who is the only one worthy of following, name I pray. Amen.
