God’s Word for Today: Flu
I am just now recovering from a family wide turning into a work site deep, case of the flu. I viewed other’s sufferings and secretly crossed my fingers in hopes that I would avoid this round. But last week, what started out as unwarranted back pain elevating into a drain from the ears hint of a scratchy throat lead to a certainty of my head and body being doomed.
Typically, with any cold or flu, rest and Vitamin C are my cure. And, if persistent cough or scratchy throat, a good shot of whisky with a proper dose of honey seems to be an intelligent remedy. No need for overpriced and immune system weakening medicine. I can handle it myself.
This time though, pharmacy here I come. Whole family is sick. Bad sick. And my head feels like there are only seconds left before the ticking bomb inside detonates. Home remedies are fine to brag about if you are not trying to defeat World War Flu in your body. Time tested and proven drugs are what are needed. Even the recommended every 8-hour dosage might be cut short to multiply sought after relief.
When asked by concerned fellow workers how I was feeling, my best description came forth as “My whole body aches. The hair on my head hurts. Even my teeth hurt.” Now that is real suffering.
Luke 5:31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
The one consolation in this pity party description of my flu, is that in Paraguay, there are many, many pharmacies. And almost all medicines are available simply for the asking and minimal currency. You can either self-diagnose or tell the pharmacist your woes, and they will recommend. No hours and dollars spent sitting with other sick people in the Doctor’s office. No prescription needed. You are sick, they will sell you whatever your preference is. Amazing amount of time and cost savings.
Our lives on the spiritual side can sometimes get the flu too. You hit the point in your life when you just plain ache. Nothing seems to help. You have looked everywhere. You have listened to others. You have used old habits to try and curb whatever ailments are destroying your life. They don’t work.
Then it is time for Jesus. His doors are always open. No need to wait in long lines. No reason to wait for someone else’s directions on how they think you should live. God knows you directly. Jesus is the Pharmacist. Only He can give you what you really need to start feeling better.
Did I thank God for giving me a body frail enough to be susceptible to another flu bug? Well, no. But I did thank him for the medicine that helped me and my family feel better. And, I thank Him every day for His sacrifice that has cured me from life’s flu of sin and death. Amen and amen.
