God’s Word for Today: Distort
Acts 20: 29-30. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number, men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.
Two parts of today’s Scripture are worth noting. First, savage wolves. I have always thought of wolves (real life, not cartoon or movie) to be like really cool, big dogs. I admire their organization in packs and the strength in numbers and if necessary as individuals. But, I suppose, just like any animal including us humans, a wolf can turn on you and become quite savage. Why are people the same way? We refer to that as “wolves in sheep’s clothing”. Maybe we should strive to be sheep in wolves clothing? I will let you ponder on that for a while.
Then, as part of the Scripture, we have today’s word, distort. Back in the day, way back actually, when one would think of distort, a twisted image of your TV screen would come to mind. It was amazing what a little interference, like lightning, could do to a picture. The old TV antenna on top of the house, or for you city folk, rabbit ears, would have to be adjusted every now and again to take care of the distortion. In black and white, some of the images were quite funny. Once we graduated to color TV, then we had like rainbow stuff going on.
Now, new apps for your phone take distort to a whole different level. The premier option of photo shop and the 1000 other picture apps was to perfect a photo. But, that got boring. What is fun now, is to take a photo of someone, even a selfie, and distort it in all kinds of way. Quite entertaining.
I don’t believe distort in the Bible was referred to in the entertaining sense. Yes, it still meant twisted, wrinkled, scrambled, and every other synonym, but it was in a bad way. Just like the savage wolves. Words that were meant for good and for direction were distorted to fit the delivers need. All in the name of drawing people away from what is true and good.
Why are people like that? That is the million-dollar question. Probably close to why some people think it is just OK to send viruses into your computer to ruin them. But why? Do they have anything to gain from this nonsense? Or, we could use a little distortion ourselves and determine that the people who sell antivirus software are the originators of the virus in the first place. While tempting to justify that as truth, we must admit that there are just bad, savage, and distorted people in this world.
Here comes the good stuff. This is very hard for many to accept. No matter how savage or how distorted a person is, God loves them too. They have a choice to turn to God, accept Jesus as their Savior, receive Grace, and enjoy eternal life with our Creator. Anyone who tries to tell you different has received a distorted truth. And, that is pulling them away from the heart of Jesus’s message.
Today, know that God loves everyone. God loves you. Maybe you have at one time, had a little distortion going on in your life. I know I have had some cases of flow blown distort myself. And to others, I may have appeared as a savage wolf. I would like to think not, but such is life. But, one simple moment of bowing down in humble submission to God, delivered me from distortion. You my friend are welcome to the very same thing. God loves you. Jesus died for you. They just ask that you love them back……
Prayer: Dear Lord who really loves me. Thank you for knowing that times in my life are going to be attacked by savage wolves and distorted truths. Forgive me for the times I have been led astray. Today, I ask for your forgiveness. For your Grace. In Jesus’ who replaced distorted teaching with pure truth, name I pray. Amen and amen.
