God’s Word for Today: Dispute.
Luke 22:24. A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.
Oh boy, dispute. Is this just a more educated sounding word than to simply argue? When you dispute something, is that more official? Dispute seems to be the word that requires a solution, an answer, a judgement.
We are only 2 days away from the Super Bowl. There are going to be many judgment calls by the referees. Some of these calls will be disputed. In today’s age of instant replay, video shots from every direction, and the maze of technology that puts everything together and sorts it out, we have most definite methods to settle disputes. At least on the NFL football field. Even with all of that, there are times when the wisest official among the group, (well maybe not the wisest, but at least the designated one with the white hat) has to settle the dispute himself. There are still some questionable circumstances that a human judgement overrules. If the referee makes the wrong decision, it will be replayed and talked about for weeks, sometimes even years.
The Super Bowl is also supposed to settle the dispute of who the greatest NFL team is for this season. Just like the World Cup is supposed to decide the greatest soccer team. When the last game is played and the winner determined, there should be no dispute over the greatest team. But, there always will be those who argue the outcome. Some have valid cases for dispute. Maybe because of injuries, or one bad call made by the officials, or just a bad day, the actual best team, is eliminated. This year, is there a better team that should be in the Super Bowl instead of the Broncos and the Panthers? This could be cause for dispute.
I find it almost comical that when Jesus walked this earth, His disciples were in constant dispute over who was the greatest. This dispute has carried itself through the ages. Many a church still disputes that they are the greatest church. They dispute that their traditions and beliefs and practices are the only true way to get to heaven. They dispute that the other Churches have it wrong. They want to tell you that it is their way, or the highway. I believe I don’t need to define the highway they are suggesting. There is a song about it.
Why is there this dispute? Why does someone have to be declared the winner? Why does there have to be a loser? Did Jesus come, spread the Good News, heal the sick and afflicted, raise the dead back to life, feed the hungry, get judged, beat, hung on a cross, died, and was resurrected, just so we could still dispute which one of us has the story right?
Today, it is a simple “Come on people!” Maybe we need to let go of the dispute. Maybe it is time to join together as one, to serve and love our fellow man. Maybe we need to refer to 1Corinthians 1:10. “Now I urge you, brothers, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you should all speak in agreement and that there should be no divisions among you, but that you may be completely united in the same mind and in the same line of thought.” Who can dispute that wisdom? Not even an agree to disagree thing going on here. No dispute, nothing argued, nada. God loved us so much He gave His Son’s life to clear our slate. It is time end the dispute, come together, and love God back. No one will care who was the greatest among us when we all get to Heaven………………
Prayer: Dear Lord, who has given me the greatest Love. I thank you for the chance you have given me to love You back. Forgive me for getting caught up in the dispute of who is right and who is best. Through Jesus, it is simple Lord. You and only You are right. You God, are number 1, period, no dispute. In Jesus’, who won the dispute for all of our sins, name I pray. Amen.
