God's Word for Today: Spirit. Now don't let today's Word scare you. Please don't skip right on by this to see the next cute photo or clever meme. Have a peaceful spirit, relax, take a couple of minutes and let's discuss spirit. Yes, there is good spirits, bad spirits, and plan ole ugly spirits. Forget about the last two, let's talk about the good.
Way back in the day. What really seems like not that long ago. Many sporting evenst, football, volleyball, basketball, or any sport where cheerleaders were involved, there was one cheer always presented. One set of cheerleaders would look at the opposing team's cheerleaders and shout: "We have spirit, yes we do, we have spirit how bout you?!" The other set of cheeleaders would shout back. Then, if the cheeleadesr were doing their job, they would get the pep club involved with the next round of, "We have spirit, yes we do, we have spirit how bout you?!!" It would be interesting to know how many readers actually know what a "pep club" is? Or, how many have their picture in their school's annual as a member of the pep club and their not so popular matching outfits. Probably a whole other story on who decided for that year what was going to be worn. In our school, I believe pep club was fazed out somewhere around 1978 or so?
I apologize for going off on a tangent. We will get back to having spirit now. The next round, the cheerleaders would have the home team's crowd participate. Well some anyway. Unless you were just too cool to have spirit. So the volume would be going up. A whole other contest within the original contest would insue. One team's fans trying to out yell the other team's fans. Back a forth a few times until finally, one of the team's set of cheerleaders would yell, "We have spirit, yes we do, we have spirit, MORE than you!!!!!" Then, with a few ahhhs and ohhhs, everyone's attention would be diverted back to the actual game that ensued.
Today, the Universtiy of Nebraska Cornhuskers play the Iowa Hawkeyes in good ole NCAA Football. Hopefully it is a good game. Iowa is so far undefeated for the season at 11 wins - 0 losses and ranked either #3 or #4 in the nation. Nebraska is not doing so good this year. They are currently at 5 wins - 6 losses. But, the game is being played at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska. There will be 91,000 plus people at the game. More than 85,000 of those people will be Husker fans. The little "spirit" contest would be a tad onesided. I believe tomorrow is the University of Oklahoma versus the University of Oklahoma State. I wonder who will have the most spirit there? There are many other final regular season college games in the next day or two. Lots of rivalries, lots of spirit.
Romans 8:14. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.
Pretty cut and dry Bible verse if you ask me. If you are led by the Spirit of God, you are one of His. If not, well, time to join the club.
Maybe part of the problem of having this Spirit filled stuff is the ones who have made a contest out of it. Their church is spouting, "We have spirit, yes we do, we have spirit more than you!!" They are not even giving an opposing church as chance to reply.
Or maybe it is individuals themselves who have climbed up on their high horse and seem to be looking down at others, exclaiming how "filled with the spirit" they are. For those, I apologize. For the churches who think they have it all, I apologize. There, I have now removed your excuse for not having the Spirit of God with you. Apology accepted?
There are also the many examples of a person's Spirit that is currently at rest. It has been tucked away in a corner for like ever, gathering dust. Or maybe one's Spirit just plain got tired and needed to take a little nap. Another situation could be one's spirit was traded for another more noteable or inticing spirit. At the time, the Spirit of the world seemed to be shouting just a little bit louder. Or possibly, you are just too cool to have Spirit.
Today, whatever the circumstance. Whatever the excuse. It is time to wake up that Holy Spirit that God gave you. Yes, you have it. If you have read this far, it means you either have it in you, or you want to receive the Holy Spirit. Either way, I guarantee you will be on the winning team. Always a 0 in the loss column. Always another number added to the win column. My Spirit has been beat up pretty bad by some of the choices I have made through life. But, it never left. It never gave up. It is still yelling, "I have Spirit yes I do, I have Spirit, how bout you?!!"........................................
Prayer: Dearest Lord, giver of your Holy Spirit, I thank you. I thank you for this gift of grace. I thank you for filling my heart with the Holy Spirit as one of your children. Forgive me for the times in life when I have pushed your Spirit to the side. I know now Lord, that being led by your Spirit, is the only direction I can go. Wake me up Lord. Let your Spirit do its work in me and through me. In Jesus', who provides the ultimate Spirit, name I pray. Amen.
