God’s Word for Today: Cynical
Romans 12:2. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Somewhere and somehow I have become cynical. I believe it snuck up on me similar to the way my love handles magically appeared. This cynical thing must have taken the same route. It started at the middle of my back and then every so quietly, snuck around the sides until it became visible to all. I believe cynical and love handles have to at least be cousins.
There are 2 main definitions of cynical and neither of them is very complimentary. The first, (believing that people are motivated by self-interest; distrustful of human sincerity or integrity) had to start growing into my personality as I have continually failed to uphold my own sincerity and/or integrity.
I did not do this on purpose. In business dealings and work ethic, I always felt I held an extremely high standard of sincerity and integrity. I believe I still strive to keep that tradition.
But in personal life, OMG………… I have not done so well. It has been similar to putting my values in a car crusher and taking them beyond any semblance of repair. So, I start building and working on a new set of values. But, Mr. Cynical has already set up shop. My own failures have led me to believe that others think the same way too. Once in this pattern, there is no breaking the circle on your own.
So, God gives one an out. Romans 12:2 is referring to the transformation of one’s thinking. It is a transformation of one’s actions. It is a way to break the cycle of self-interest motivation. Very difficult in this day and age. Just watch TV for a little while. Watch the Presidential Conventions. Watch a 24 hour feed of, not so good.
Today, realize the only way to battle cynical is to meet it face on with God’s help. Not some person sitting in a leather chair giving you advice. Not in any man written self-help books. But rather in God’s book and by God’s word. About like going on a diet to make the love handles disappear. You can so make cynical go back to where it came from………………
Prayer: Dear God, who always knows what is best. Forgive me for allowing cynical to be a part of my life. Help me to put cynical to rest once and for all. In Jesus’, who taught God’s good, pleasing, and perfect will, name I pray. Amen and amen.
