God’s Word for Today: Cope.
Ecclesiastes 7:29. This only have I found: God created mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes.
Cope. What a word. To me, to cope is to temporarily accept a situation until one can fix said situation. Different dictionaries even have their own opinions. One says, as a noun, a cope is: a long, loose piece of clothing that is worn by a priest on special occasions. I suppose somewhere I have heard that definition. I believe my Mom had a cope or two she wore during her Ministry. I will now try to remember that definition.
As a verb, is where we really dig into this cope thing. First, we have; to deal successfully with a difficult situation. That is never how I have defined cope. But, that is what the Cambridge English Dictionary says. Then Dictionary.com says; to face and deal with responsibilities, problems, or difficulties, especially successfully or in a calm or adequate manner. That actually is a pretty positive definition too.
So, why do we consider coping mechanisms such a bad thing? Dictionaries are saying that to cope is to be successful. Not once did they say anything about temporary success, or hiding from a responsibility, problem, or difficulty. Rather, they hint at cope to be a successful endeavor.
Maybe the meat of the matter is revealed in one last definition; something resembling a cope (as by concealing or covering). There we have it. Finally, it rears its truthful head. To cope can easily mean to simply cover over something. Out of sight, out of mind. Right? It, the problem, responsibility, or difficulty will still be there, but we cope with it by simply avoiding it. Whatever source of coping is handy to us. I know my coping mechanisms. Do you?
This brings us to today’s verse. “Gone in search of many schemes”, is another way of saying that we have found various ways to cope. We don’t need to define the various coping mechanisms that this world offers. Been there, done that, is good enough. Instead, lets us take this word cope and put it back into simple priests clothing and word working joints. Let us no longer just cope.
Today, instead of cope, lets repair, address, correct, and handle our problems. Let’s use Matthew 6:33; But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
When you find the next thing that triggers your desire to turn to your coping mechanism. And, guaranteed, it will come. Try something new. Try a different approach. Try God. Give Him a chance to help you cope………………
Prayer: Dear God who art in Heaven. Thank you for your numerous and wonderful blessings. Forgive me for the times I forget everything you have set in front of me, and because of some situation, have turned to this world for the next scheme to cope. I confess, this doesn’t work. I pray that You, God, will take control for me and help me to address the trials of life with your Love, Compassion, and most of all, Grace. In Jesus’, who never coped, but faced everything upright, name I pray. Amen.
