God’s Word for Today: Control
Romans 6:20. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness.
Read this Scripture again.
I believe we all have a great desire to control. Whether it is circumstances, life’s events, our relationships, even our bladder, we seek control. If we lose control, then things aren’t so good. We then feel lost, worthless, broken, lonely, disgusted, wet.
It is in our nature to seek control. Go to a book store or library sometime, trot over to the “self-help” section, and count how many books are written on, control. These books want to teach you how to control something in your life. Think about this for a moment. As soon as you purchase said self-help book, it has control over you. If you don’t read it and utilize its teachings, you have just wasted $25.95. That book has control.
Or, look at relationships. A large portion of the effort, expelled into a relationship, especially in the early stages, is a battle for control. You really want your significant other to act and react to your will. If they would only say these words. If they would only do this for me. Most certainly, if they would stop that bad habit that disgusts me, then I would be happier with them. Maybe then our relationship would be stronger. In all those statements, were is the control directed?
One could look at various addictions. We head to any number of enticements because we seek control. We think we can control all the bad and negative that is eating away at us, by using an external source to extinguish and numb our senses. We feel like we have control of the amount of pain removal substance we choose. As long as we can control it, then all is good. Soon, the tables are turned. Soon, the addiction controls us.
So, why do we hesitate so much to let God have control? Why do we spend exuberant amounts of energy trying to control everything in our lives and then it slowly destroys us? Destroy might be a harsh word. Slowly degrade. Is that better? How can words ever be put, to everything in this world that suddenly bares its negative and life sucking self? Try to control your finances by following another flawed human. Fail. Try to control your relationships by attempting to changes others. Fail. Try to control all the pressures in life that try to drag you down by leaning on a worldly desire. Fail.
What if, just maybe, we let God have control? Easily said, difficult to accomplish. I can count the times in my life that I finally gave up trying to control my life and let God take over. I can also count how many times I have tried to take back control because life’s roller coaster was on the good side of the hill, and I put God behind me. Will I ever break from this pattern? Can you relate to what I am saying? Simply put; God in control, life is complete. Me in control, life goes to hell in a handbasket. Literally.
Today, address where your control level is. Think about why this control thing is so powerful. Why is it so very difficult to let God have control? Why is it even more difficult to let God continue having control? Then pray. You do have control over that. Prayer is the one and only control that will save your life. Want to read a book that will give you control over all phases of your life? Go to the Good Book that has 66 chapters. Let that book take control……….
Prayer: Dear God, make of me. Thank you for giving me free rein with my life. Forgive me for the many times I have tried to control the events and directions that have only led to, well, not so good. Help me today to have the strength and courage to let you God, have control. This righteousness thing might just what I need in my life. In Jesus’, who gave his life so we could give control to God, name I pray. Amen and amen.
