God’s Word for Today: Clean Slate
As we come to the close of another year, we find ourselves reflecting on the past. We try to remember all the good things that happened this last year. But, there are the bad things that pull us away from chocking up 2016 as a good year to remember. Why do bad things that happen to us have so much power?
That is the pull of New Year’s Eve. We finally get to rid ourselves of the bad things and focus on the future. The appeal to party our mind into oblivion is strong. Out with the bad, in with the good. At least, in with the good, after the hangover dissipates.
We just finished celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. A period of Joy, Peace and Good Will toward man. A time when giving takes priority over receiving. A time when God provided the means to wipe the slate clean. No hangover necessary.
Ephesians 4:23-24. To be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
“Made new in attitude” is good stuff. And to “put on the new self” is always a goal for the next year. But, to “be like God in true righteousness and holiness” appears to be impossible. I know no matter how hard I try, in some way I will fail.
We all were “created to be like God”. Note, this does not say, “created to be God”, or “created to be God like”. Simply, God created us in His image. Then he gave us free reign to screw up our own lives. Because of God’s love for us though, He also gave us a chance to daily, go out with the bad and in with the good.
Do you want 2017 to be the best year you have ever had? Can 2017 erase all of 2016 and every year before that? Yes, 2017 including God, through the Salvation of Jesus Christ, will do that for you. For eternity……… Amen and amen.
