God’s Word for Today: Bells.
Job 13:17. Listen carefully to what I say; let my words ring in your ears.
Yesterday, I mentioned the subject of bells. My current selection of wakeup call via my glorious I-phone 5, is Hells Bells by AC/DC. This choice was in no form made because of the subject matter of the song, but rather the majestic calling of the bells at the beginning of the song.
For me, bells ringing is a beckoning to church. I suppose I might be the last generation that even uses the phrase “bats in a belfry”, no less understands its meaning. I will also admit that I just had to reference a dictionary to spell belfry correctly. Even spellcheck on my computer didn’t have a clue. This word is officially gone. Back to our bells.
Bells, let’s name a few. In USA, we have the famous Liberty Bell. More famous around the world is the cow bell. I believe some goats and sheep are decorating with the beckoning bell too. Or, in the rodeo circuit, you have the infamous cow bell that is ringing under the front quarter of the bull who is at the time, trying his best to rid himself of the cowboy holding on for dear life. Then, you have the bell ringing at the beginning and ending of every round in a boxing match. And, I cannot close the subject of bells without mentioning the dinner bell.
Anytime I was at Grandma and Grandpa Carlson’s house, usually hanging out with Dad and Grandpa in the shop working on something, I always kept one ear pointed in the general direction of the house. You see, when it was time to eat, Grandma would step out the back door of the house and ring the dinner bell. All tools would be dropped. Current task quickly set to the side. And feet, trying to calmly proceed toward the beckoning bell. All I can say is, one was never disappointed in Grandma’s cooking. I can still taste every scrumptious bite.
Then we have the above mentioned church bells. If one can believe Wikipedia, church bells have been around for over 1,600 years. The church I grew up in had no belfry. Occasionally though, by means of a speaker mounted on the outer wall of the church, a recording would be played via the PA system. This recording, LP record, and PA System, older than most bells, would actually sound fairly realistic. Other churches in town, I believe, had the real thing. Any of them ringing was a calling that was difficult to resist. Hopefully, you have heard the same calling.
And, that brings us to today’s scripture. Just like a bell ringing, God is calling you. Every day, you have the choice to listen and follow His beckoning. Or, you can choose to ignore the bells ringing, and simply go your own way. God has chosen you out of a crowd. If you are reading this, the bells are ringing. And trust me, the meal of happiness, hope, and love that God has prepared for you sure beats the cold empty meal the beckoning of this world has to offer. Tasted both, prefer God’s words. Let them ring forever in your life………………
Prayer: Dear God creator of all that is good. I thank you for your beckoning call. Forgive me for the times I have ignored your bells and followed my own ringing. Help me today to go in your direction. I am tired of losing my way. Help me to focus on your ringing bells Lord, your calling. All that is right and good depend on it. In Jesus’, who rang the bell of Grace, name I pray. Amen.
