God’s Word for Today: Bail
Matthew 20:28. Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
I have never spent time in jail. That little sentence should say a lot about my life, but it really says nothing. The only thing it might say is that I just never got caught. Yes, I have done a few illegal things in my time. Some, not intentionally. Others, at the time, I just really didn’t care. Terry was number 1, to heck with a few obscure rules and laws, I was going to have fun.
Dad always told us kids, maybe it was just me, as the black sheep, but I will always remember these words; “If you do anything that leads to your landing in jail, I will bail you out. But, you might as well wait till the next day to call me because I am not going to bail you out until you have sat in jail and considered your actions overnight.” Very wise counsel from a very wise man. Luckily, I never had to make that phone call. Also very comforting that I knew Dad would always have my back.
Now that we have discussed the literal fact of being behind metal bars, let us discuss the other types of jail we might end up in. You could also easily refer to figurative jail as another word for hell.
Mom always said, there is a heaven and there is a hell. And if you really want to know, there is a form of hell right here on this earth on any given day. It is not that hard to find. She of course was correct. I have been to hell on earth. It is a jail. Not metal bars, but definitely mental bars. Mom also spent a good portion of her life providing bail for those who found themselves in figurative jail.
This week, many refer to as Holy Week, addresses the events that led to God paying our bail through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Good stuff right there. Sad, confusing, scary, and dreadful story of an innocent man being put to death. And, in reality, there should be nothing good at all about how we so easily turned on someone who only showed love and compassion for all. But we did, we always will do the same thing. Man, do we have some problems. God could and probably should have left us in jail and thrown away the key.
But, God didn’t then, and He won’t now. Jesus has already paid your bail money. Jesus gave you a Get Out of Jail Free card to be used as many times as you need it. Thank God. I didn’t learn my lesson the first, second, or a few times after that. Why I have kept seeking hell and ending up in my own prison, I find very frustrating. I am a work in progress removing the source of my failures.
Today, think about how your life is today. Might not be so bad. Might actually be running pretty smooth on cruise control. Or, it might be not so good. You might actually confirm that you are neck deep in confinement and see no way out. Wherever you are today, know that your Dad has you covered. Know that everything going on this week is the culmination of God having your back. You just need to give Jesus a call. The Risen Christ will pay your bail…………..
Prayer: Dearest Lord, creator of the Master Plan for my life. Thank you for providing the ultimate sacrifice for my sins. Forgive me for the times I have sought out things of this world that appeared good, only to find myself behind the bars of hell. By now God, most people have given up on me. But Lord, for some reason you love me beyond anything I can measure. Thank you for providing me an out. With your help, I know I can do better. In Jesus’, whose death and resurrection paid the bail for my sins, name I pray. Amen and amen.
