God’s Word for Today: Actions.
Galatians 6:4-5. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.
“Actions speak louder than words.” How many times have you heard that phrase? You and I both know this phrase is not referring to the good actions one does, but rather the bad actions everyone so conveniently keeps a list of. And, who am I to say this is wrong. It is the truth. Actions do speak louder than words when referring to someone’s history.
So, we have determined that our actions have now spoken. Our fellow man has judged us by our actions. What do we have left? If we were to continually reflect on every bad action that we have been guilty of throughout our life, well why do we even wake up every day? Have you ever used other’s view of yourself as an excuse to continue down the wrong path? Simply put, “people expect nothing but the worst from me anyway, I sure don’t want to disappoint them.” Can you relate to that attitude?
How can we overcome our actions? Will others always view us by our past actions even if we are trying to do our best and improve our actions? Do 1000 good actions outweigh one bad action? Not if you view them from the human perspective. If you were to go to my hometown right now and take a poll, guaranteed, you would come up with a list of Terry’s bad actions that far outweigh anything good people had to say. This is sad. This is heavy. This is depressing. This is reality. Or, is it?
It is all proof of the control evil has over this world. Jesus came, did His thing, and made evil look like a joke. His actions were nothing short of perfect, right, just, and good. Jesus did it right, and we killed him anyway. He went back to His hometown and they hung him on a cross. Can you relate? How many of us carry the weight and guilt of our own actions so heavily that we can hardly bear the thought of going to face our accusers? The actions of our past are preventing us from the goodness of our future. How can we ever overcome?
From a human standpoint, the answer to this question of overcoming our past actions is, “never”.
From God’s standpoint the answer is “right now”.
And how do we overcome our past actions? With words my friend. Words do speak louder than actions. Words can take all actions of the past and erase them. Wipe the slate clean. The secret, is where those words are directed. The words themselves are between you and God. I cannot tell you what to say. I can only tell you who to say them to. Jesus cleared the way. Jesus put the words into your heart. Jesus who had no bad actions, but paid the ultimate price for your actions, now wants to hear your words.
You could say the most perfectly scripted words of forgiveness to your fellow man, and they would mean nothing. Your actions will always speak louder to others. That is sad, but it is the truth. But, you can speak the most imperfect words to God, through Jesus, and your actions will be forever wiped clean.
Today, try letting your words speak louder than your actions. Direct them to God. Then, your actions will begin to reflect the goodness and love that God had planned for you from the beginning. Don’t let your past actions prevent you from speaking the words of forgiveness to God………
Prayer: Dear Lord, master of my life. I thank you for the Gift of Salvation you have laid at my feet. Forgive me for listening to the words of this world that keep me in condemnation. You know my wrong actions better than I do myself. Today, I hand them over to you God. I know you are the only one who will take them from me and erase them from my life. Forgive me Lord, forgive me. In Jesus’, whose actions spoke volumes of words just for me, name I pray. Amen
